– MESQUITE, Texas (Aug. 19, 2014) – Saturday was a special night for Josh Baughman and his Jason Johnson Racing team.
Baughman charged from sixth to score his first career win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway during the ASCS Gulf South Region and ASCS Lone Star Region co-sanctioned event. It also marked his second victory of the season.
“That one was pretty good,” he said. “That place has ate my lunch for the last year and a half. I’ve destroyed a lot of cars there. To get a win at Devil’s Bowl was pretty special.”
Baughman opened the night by advancing from sixth to third place in his heat race, which earned him a spot in the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 6 in the random draw to line up on the outside of the third row for the 25-lap feature.
“Starting sixth in the main on a lock-down track, I didn’t think we could get it done with the guys starting on the front,” he said. “We stuck it on the bottom and the next thing we knew we were passing for the lead.”
Baughman took over the top spot on Lap 10 and he cruised to the victory.
“I felt like everybody was biking more,” he said. “Everyone was probably too tight. We just hit our marks for 25 laps. Basically we could put our car wherever we wanted.”
The weekend started on Friday at Heart O’Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, where Baughman powered from fifth to win his heat race. That gave him the most points of any driver and in the feature redraw he pulled the No. 3 to line up on the inside of the second row.
“I got chopped on the first lap going into turn one,” he said. “It spun me out. I went to the back and just destroyed my car. I was passing cars on the top in turns one and two, but in turns three and four there just was nothing there. I got over the lip in turn four and hit the wall and tore up some stuff. That was me trying to make something of nothing. I felt like we had a car to win both nights.”
Baughman was unable to finish the race after colliding with the wall a handful of laps into the main event. He was credited with a 17th-place result.
The team will tackle Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas, this Friday and Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., on Saturday with the ASCS Sooner Region.
