– HIGHLANDS, Texas (Sept. 7, 2015) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. continued his torrid pace aboard the Keith Dobbs owned sprint car last weekend throughout the 14th annual Gulf South Championship Weekend.
Hafertepe Jr. finished third during the opening night of the ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader before capturing his third triumph of the season on Saturday to cap the two-race weekend at Battleground Speedway.
That gives Hafertepe Jr. three wins and five podium results during seven races with Dobbs.
“It’s been really good,” he said. “We’ve done really well with the whole operation. It’s pretty awesome to have a car working that good.”
Hafertepe Jr. kicked off the weekend on Friday by advancing from third to second place during a heat race. That locked him into the feature redraw, where he pulled the highest number – eight – to line up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.
“We got to fifth on the first lap,” he said. “We rode around there for a little while before getting up to fourth. (Aaron) Reutzel popped a tire leading and it had already laid rubber at that point. We just had to ride for the rest of race and finish where we were. The last few restarts I rode in the rubber low and held my line and hoped one of those guys in front of me would mess up.”
The third-place finish, which marked his fifth top five of the season, locked Hafertepe Jr. into the feature redraw for Saturday’s main event. This time he pulled the No. 2 to start on the outside of the front row.
“On Saturday they prepped the track a lot better,” he said. “We took the lead from the get-go. I got a good jump and basically started stretching my lead out on the guys. We always had quite a few lapped cars between us and second.”
Hafertepe Jr. led the distance to register an ASCS Gulf South Region victory for the third straight year.
He is slated to return to action this weekend with Hill’s Racing Team on Friday at Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario, Canada, and Saturday at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., for the Cole Cup with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints.
