From Bill Meyer
Abbottstown, PA — (April 16, 2016) — “This is unbelievable. I need someone to pinch me right now.”
So said Tyler Ross after scoring his first career win in the 410 sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
Points handicapping placed Ross on the outside of the front row for the start, but he dropped to fourth by the end of the first lap. He recovered to pass Robbie Kendall for third on lap two, and then reclaimed second from Austin Hogue on a lap 11 restart, following a caution for Danny Dietrich, who stopped in turn four after bouncing off the wall in turns one and two.
He chased polesitter and race-long leader Tim Glatfelter for the next four laps before grabbing the lead from Trone Outdoor/Eagle Steel #39 on a lap 16 restart.
He led the rest of the way in non-stop racing over the final ten laps, crossing 1.87 seconds ahead of a closing Alan Krimes, who advanced from tenth starting spot to finish second.
“I wasn’t sure it was going to happen, especially this early in the season,” said Ross, “This is only our third time here this year, so to be this fast this early I’m excited to see how the rest of the season goes.”
Glatfelter, Hogue, and Kendall completed the top five, with Jim Siegel, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., Brian Montieth, Cory Haas, and Danny Dietrich rounding out the top ten.
“I gotta thank my dad (Sam). He works his tail off all week long in getting this thing ready,” added Ross, “We’ve got a lot of good help this year. I want to thank Rick Lefever from Lefever Electric (prime sponsor). He couldn’t make it tonight. We’ll have to give him a call here.”
“This is my third year here, and I finally learned to get the wing back,” added Ross, “I got a lot of bite coming off the bottom on the restarts, and that helped me get into the corners.
Heats for the 27 410 sprints were won by Danny Dietrich, McIntyre, and Ross, with Billy Dietrich winning the consolation.
Fawn Grove’s Matt Campbell came from eighth starting spot to claim the win in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature.
Wyatt Hinkle led the first two laps from the pole before sixth-starting Tyler Esh drove around him into the race lead on lap three. Meanwhile, Campbell followed him into second on the fifth lap before running him down at the half-way point. Campbell led the rest of the way through heavy lapped traffic, crossing 1.47 seconds ahead of Esh, with tenth-starting Adrian Shaffer, Matt Findley, and Jeff Rohrbaugh completing the top five.
Heats for the 31 358 sprints were won by Shaffer, Brie Hershey, and Kyle Denmyer, with Chandler Leiby winning the consolation.
Kyle Lear scored his first career Lincoln win in the Precise Racing Products three-track series opener for 358 late models. Lear started on the pole and raced side-by-side with outside front row starter Sam Gallagher for the first two laps, with Gallagher leading lap one and Lear scored the leader of lap two.
Lear controlled the pace the rest of the way, despite late-race heat from Ralph Morgan, Jr., who pulled alongside Lear racing off the final turns to the checkered flag.
Third through fifth were Gallagher, Randy Christine, Jr., and Shaun Jones.
Heats for the 23 358 late models were won by Lear, Gallagher, and Christine.
Next weekend, Saturday, April 23rd, Lincoln Speedway will host the 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints, and Central PA Legends at 7 PM. That night the Legends will compete in a regularly scheduled racing program with 20-lap feature, along with the April 2nd rained-out 20-lap feature. Gates will open at 5 PM.
