Quickie Version of the Labor Day Weekend 2002

When a person goes to races as long as I have in my short lifetime only a few weekends really stand out amongst the others. I have a feeling down the road this past Labor Day weekend will be one of those as I took in four different tracks in four nights. During those four events I saw Late Models (I’m not proud), AVSS, USAC Midgets, All Star Sprints, and 305 sprints.

Schatz Wins Thursday Feature For the Ages at Knoxville

Donny Schatz came out on top of a tremendous battle with Tyler Walker and Danny Lasoski to take the victory Thursday night at the Mopar Parts Knoxville Nationals. For Schatz, Walker, and Lasoski swapped the lead back and forth several times, even racing three wide on occasion before Schatz took command on lap 23 and pulled away the last two laps to take the victory in the Parker Stores sponsored #15 car.

Joey Saldana scored the biggest win of his career on Saturday at the 19th annual Kings Royal at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Joey is now the ninth different driver to wear the crown. Saldana’s previous best finish was a fourth place during his previous eight starts.

Holy Moly, Roepke Wins the Doty

Elmore’s Alvin Roepke took one home for the regular Attica Raceway Park racers, winning the 14th Annual Brad Doty Classic, presented by Wirtgen America. The Attica points leader’s win was worth $14,000. Roepke passed Butch Schroeder on lap six and dominated the remainder of the race. Dean Jacobs came from a tenth place start to finish second over a late-charging Dale Blaney.

One Can Really Go Home Again

Two weeks ago Friday night rolled around and I ended up getting out of work quite a bit later than I had originally planned. After figuring out how much time I had vs. how much time it would take to drive to my original destination, I called my Dad and told him I was going to Ionia Raceway Park this week. This trip was not for a sprint car race, but mainly to check out what is going on at the track I call home.

DRC Indy Makes a Huge Splash at Hartford

Imagine pouring your heart and soul into designing and building your very first race car and having a future NASCAR star drive it into victory lane the first night out of the box. Joe Devin could never imagine in his wildest dreams a debut for the new DRC chassis as took place at Hartford Speedway Park during the All Star Circuit of Champions event. Kahne drove the new car to victory in it’s very first outing lapped up to the eighth place car.

After driving through clouds dark enough to make myself think, “This has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever done”, the trip was made worthwhile as the rain held off so I could see another instant classic at the Gas City I-69 Speedway. Indy Brings Out the Kid in Me

After starting the year with gale force winds, arctic conditions, and lots of rain mother nature finally spotted the Slideways crew a decent weekend last week when we headed out to Gas City I-69 Speedway, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and US 24 Speedway in Logansport, Indiana.
