Knoxville, IA — (August 13, 2015) — Terry McCarl was victorious on Thursday night during the Lucas Oil qualifying night Thursday during the FVP Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. From 10th starting position McCarl passed Danny Lasoski with 10 laps to go and pulled away for the victory.

For McCarl the caution aiding him in passing Lasoski for the victory was a bit of a surprise.

“It actually worked out good for me. Danny was checked out there and I was slowly reeling in Jason (Johnson), so I didn’t really want that caution I think because it took me a couple of laps to get going,” said McCarl. “After the restart I had not been the top, not once, and I knew Danny and Jason were running really well up there. I kind of saw where Danny ran that restart before, so I went up and tried the top and it felt really good. I didn’t hit it perfect, so Danny kind of got away from me, but then the yellow came out. So it gave me another chance to perfect it.”

Lasoski jumped into the lead at the start with Jason Johnson and Lucas Wolfe racing for second. After swapping the position back and forth Johnson took the spot on lap three. One lap later the caution appeared when Brooke Tatnell slowed in turn two. During that same caution Tim Shaffer slowed in turn four and went back to his pit area. Tatnell rejoined the tail of the field.

Lasoski motored away during the restart while Lucas Wolfe, Sammy Swindell, Joey Saldana, and Dale Blaney raced for third on back racing two and three wide. Behind them McCarl and James McFadden were picking their way through the field as well. In the commotion McCarl eventually blasted into third position.

Then on lap eight Dale Blaney got over the cushion and into the wall in turn one. Blaney went to the work ahead and was able to rejoin the tail of the field.

During the restart Johnson got a run on Lasoski for the lead, attempting the slide job in turns three and four but could not make the pass. That slowed Johnson’s momentum enough for McCarl to challenge for the second spot. McCarl made his move on lap 12 under Johnson, but could not make the pass. One lap later Johnson bobbled and that allowed McCarl to move into second through turns three and four.

As McCarl moved into second Tatnell got upside down in turn four. Tatnell exited the car under his own power, but had to go pit side due to causing a second caution flag in the main event. The first attempt to restart the race following the red flag with 14 laps to go was called back when Clint Garner hit the restart cone. On the second attempt McCarl put the heat on Lasoski for the lead. On lap 15 Lasoski bobbled off turn two and allowed McCarl to get a run on him down the backstretch. McCarl made the pass in turns three and four and instantly opened a sizeable advantage.
Behind McCarl and Lasoski, Johnson found himself under pressure from Kerry Madsen and 23rd starting Brian Brown. Eventually Madsen and Brown ended up racing with each other, allowing Johnson to pull away.

Up front it was all McCarl taking the checkered flag over Lasoski, Johnson, Madsen, and Brown.

Brad Sweet was the fastest qualifier over the 57 car field with a lap of 15.086 seconds. R.J. Johnson, Madsen, Zomer, Lasoski, and Sammy Swindell won heat race events. Bill Balog won the C-Main event while Clint Garner won the B-Main.

On the opening lap of the first heat race Kevin Swindell flipped in turn four. Swindell was able to talk to the Knoxville Raceway safety crew while being extricated from his car and was eventually air lifted to a Des Moines hospital.
