From ABC Auto Gear Racing
With rain playing havoc with racing schedules up and down the east coast of the country on Boxing Night and forcing the postponement of the International Sprintcar Series in Brisbane until this evening, ABC Auto Gear Racing team driver Todd Wanless packed his helmet bag and headed west to Kwinana for the Sprintcar Christmas Cup at the Perth Motorplex last night.
Wanless has based a car in Western Australia this season with a view to running a number of races in the west when the opportunities arise and the late decision to travel west proved a fruitful one with Todd earning his first Fast Time Award at the Motorplex.
Todd was the quickest of the twenty-three drivers to face the clock with a 15.179s lap of the Speedway in the #2 Aljon/Action Metal Recyclers/Self Serve Auto Parts J&J, nearly two tenths quicker than his closest rival.
Starting from position eight in the Feature, Wanless moved forward to as high as fourth mid-way through the race before a yellow light slowed the field and he was moved back two spots to sixth for the restart, the position he would ultimately finish the twenty-five lap race in.
“Pretty happy with how we went tonight” was Wanless’ summation of his results.
“The track was a little more to our liking this time around and that showed in time trials, it’s always nice to set fast time and I was really happy with getting it tonight. Our Heats were tough to pass in though so Buzzy made a few changes for the Feature and I think we had a car we could have got onto the podium with given a little luck. We’re still happy with sixth after travelling across the country today to do it.”
“There’s a few more races we’d like to do over here in the west this season, Gavin (Migro) and the guys run a good show and we enjoy racing at the Motorplex so we’ll circle some dates on the calendar and head back across in the new year.” he added.
With the first of the International Sprintcar Series events at Brisbane International Speedway rescheduled for tonight after being rained out on Boxing Day, Wanless returned home this morning to prepare for the event.
Todd and team mate Pete Thorley, who will have his first drive of the team’s new #51 Tyrepower/Action Metal Recyclers Eagle Sprintcar, will form a major part of the Australian challenge against Americans Brent Kaeding, Bud Kaeding and Jess Hockett in tonight’s thirty lap Feature race at Archerfield.
