From Dean Reynolds
After several seasons under the ownership of the Caprara Bros., Can-Am was sold to Rochester businessman, racing competitor and fan Tiger Chapman. New ideas and vigor has seen the first half of the 2010 season on the road to success. Chip Burdick stayed on as the leader of the 4/10ths mile oval and the LaFargeville facility hasn’t missed a beat.
Can-Am is under its second season running on Friday nights after a Saturday night track for nearly three decades. Big Block, DirtCar modifieds roam free and have grown in numbers along with several other divisions that keep the family atmosphere alive.
What has proved successful this year so far is use of the facility in other forms of entertainment, snow drags, ATV drags, concerts, enduros, etc… That has brought new people to the track which brings them to a Friday night to see what the racing is all about.
An aggressive schedule for the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints (ESS) will see three visits this season. In what is hoped to be a tradition, Shootout Weekend will see back to back ESS events on July 4th weekend with the Saturday show paying a whopping $4,000 to win. Also, what is hoped to be a new tradition, will be a Friday night stop on Labor Day Weekend. ESS shows are just part of an exciting schedule, World of Outlaw Late Models (already run in June in front of a packed house), All Star Sprints and the Wednesday night stop of Super Dirt Week are just some of the added spice.
ESS drivers of local interest is of course Jeff Cook, who’s Rt. 37 Building Supply sponsor is backing the Shootout weekend for the sprints, The Wilson family of Rick and April, Chris Jones, Tyler Rand, Paul Pekkonen and others.
