New Weston, OH — Jac Haudenschild opened up the 2010 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway in exciting style by winning the World of Outlaws feature after an exciting dual with Sammy Swindell. Haudenschild took the lead from Swindell while negotiating slower traffic and held off Swindell’s last ditch slide job for victory.
Swindell and Joey Saldana started on the front row for the 30-lap feature event. During the initial start Todd Kane spun in turn one to bring out the caution flag. While the cars were slowing Saldana went over a wheel and flipped hard in turn three. Saldana was later transported to a local hospital for observation.
During the restarted Swindell led the field as 2010 Knoxville Nationals winner Tim Shaffer raced up to second with Danny Lasoski, Kerry Madsen, and Donny Schatz battling for third. The caution flag appeared on lap four when Brian Ellenberger spun in turn four. Ellenberger retired from the event with front end damage.
Swindell pulled away during the restart with Danny Lasoski moving up to second. Lasoski briefly challenged Swindell for the lead, but Swindell held onto the top spot. Then on lap six Kerry Madsen hit the wall in turn two to bring out the caution flag. Madsen’s team was unable to make repairs in time for the restart.
Swindell pulled away again during the restart as Lasoski found himself challenged by Haudneschild for second with 10 laps complete. As Swindell started to overtake slower traffic Haudenschild moved up to second after completing a slide job on Lasoski. By the halfway point the leaders found themselves in heavy traffic as Haudenschild quickly closed on Swindell. Then on lap 16 Haudenschild struggled to lap Cale Conley and allowed Swindell to pull away.
Then on lap 18 the red flag appeared when Dean Jacobs flipped in turn four and collected Conley. Jacobs exited the car under his own power and officials called for an open red flag period for teams to work on the cars.
Right after the restart Brad Sweet made contact with the inside wall and collected Randy Hannagan to bring out the caution flag before anther lap could be completed. During the next attempt to restart the feature the caution reappeared to penalize Dale Blaney two positions for jumping.
When the green flag appeared Swindell and Haudenschild battled for the lead. On lap 23 Haudenschild attempted a slide job turns one and two on Swindell and took the lead, but Swindell tried to counter the move, but could not wrestle the lead back from Haudenschild.
After a brief challenge from Paul McMahan, who had raced up to third position, Swindell caught Haudenschild in lapped traffic. Swindell tried one last slide job on the final lap in turns three and four, but Haudenschild used his momentum to motor to the checkered flag over Swindell, McMahan, Lasoski, and Shaffer.
Saldana had taken the point lead earlier in the night by setting the fastest qualification time. Meyers regained the point lead with a 13th place finish in the feature, but both Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz gained ground on the leaders with their top ten finishes.
