May 10, 2011 – Brandon Wimmer would have liked about twice as many laps at the Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio last weekend, but Mother Nature had other plans. The World of Outlaws did get their first night in on Friday, and the Fairmount, Indiana driver took the Alan Barton Motorsports Hedman Husler Hedders #7TW to a twelfth place finish. The team is looking for a weekend off before their schedule picks up again.
With 39 cars pitside, Brandon timed in 14th, making the heat invert. “We’re getting there with qualifying,” he says. “Our motor is running really well. We made some changes last winter and it’s running better. We definitely got a good lap in. With forty cars there, it wasn’t easy, but we got it done.”
Starting on the pole in a heat race at Eldora can be tough when the top side is the preferred line. Brandon fought valiantly, but ended up third behind a pair of veterans. “We were able to start in the front row, but we have to step it up and finish in the top two to make the dash,” he says. “We’ve finished third the last couple of races. We had Kerry Madsen on the outside of us, and Joey Saldana was starting fourth. We were in second behind Madsen there for a lap. I tried to get by him, and Joey was able to get by me.”
The track stayed in good shape for racing all night. Brandon started 15th in the main event. “The cushion took a while to move up the track,” he says. “There was a good cushion all night…it wasn’t dead slick. Later in the night, you couldn’t run right on it, you had to be off it a little.”
He again finished ahead of his starting spot. That’s something he has done every time out in 2011 with the Outlaws. He would cross twelfth on this night. “We were pretty good,” he says. “We had some cars pass us, but we passed some too. Overall, it wasn’t too bad at all. We had hoped to get Saturday in so we could try a few things. Unfortunately, it started raining when we were headed to the pits.”
Brandon made the finale at the $50,000 to win King’s Royal in 2010, and hopes to repeat that in July. “It gives us some confidence heading into the King’s Royal in July,” he says of Friday. “We were happy with it.”
The team is putting together its upcoming schedule. “We’re probably taking this week off, and then running Knoxville the next weekend (May 21),” says Brandon. “We’ll head to Tunica, Mississippi the Monday after. Our schedule will really pick up in June. We’ll do the Knoxville Outlaw shows and Ohio Speedweek.”
Brandon and the Alan Barton Motorsports #7TW team would like to thank Hedman Husler Hedders, Maxim Chassis, Gaerte Engines, Beck’s Tree Farm, K&N Filters, Butlerbuilt, Red Line Oil, Comp Cams, All Star Performance, KSE, Rod End Supply, Simpson and WRT Web Designs.
