MCCUNE SWEEPS MUSTSEE NATIONALS

From Jim Hanks

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Jimmy McCune made it a clean sweep to clinch the MustSee Nationals, capturing the weekend finale feature event on Sunday night at Rockford Speedway in BIOBASED.US Xtreme Sprint Series action.

Using a borrowed powerplant from Dick Kercher of Kercher Engines, McCune took command when race leader Mike Larrison spun in the late going. McCune then survived a side-by-side challenge from series points leader Troy DeCaire on the ensuring restart to make it two straight in series action. McCune was also victorious in the feature race at Dells Raceway Park the previous evening.

DeCaire held on to finish second, with JoJo Helberg third. Jason Cox drove from deep in the field to take the fourth finishing position, with Ryan Litt fifth. The second five consisted of Jeff Bloom, Aaron Pierce, Larrison, Tim Cox, and Jason Blonde.

Jacob Wilson topped the field in a scintillating qualifying session that had the fans cheering, with several cars under the track record. In the late going Wilson’s 11.308-second tour was the fastest sprint car lap in the 62-year history of Rockford Speedway.

Qualifying heats went to Dave Baumgartner, Jerry Caryer, and Pierce. Hank Lower and Donnie Adams were uninjured in a grinding crash in the third heat race, eliminating Adams from competition and forcing Lower to make quick repairs with extensive help from surrounding crews.

The series will return to action in two weeks with a popular return to Michigan’s Kalmamazoo Speedway on Saturday, July 16.
