Port Royal – One of the most iconic sprint cars in the history of the sport will return to Port Royal Speedway for the “Living Legends” Dream Race 5 coming up on Saturday, August 6 at 7:30 PM.

Lance Dewease and car owners Don and Lisa Owens announced on Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway that Dewease will be shod with a Dyer Masonry No. 461 sprint car for the prestigious, high-dollar event, named this season in honor of legendary car owner Walter Dyer and Port Royal driving kingpin Keith Kauffman.

Speedway officials announced last week that this years Dream Race will honor both men and their careers at Port Royal Speedway, bestowing upon them the award of “Living Legend,” for their immeasurable roles in sprint car racing at the track throughout its storied history.

Dyer began owning sprint cars in the area and at Port Royal in 1967 before picking up his first win there in 1975.

After hooking up with young lion Lance Dewease in 1991, the duo spun off their most successful years in the sport in either man’s career with Dewease taking over 100 wins while at the 461 wheel.

Fayetteville’s Dewease currently owns 94 wins at Port Royal with the lion’s share coming at the helm of Dyer’s “Brickmobile.”

“Without Walt I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Dewease said in victory lane Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway before adding that it will be his honor to bring the No. 461 back to the track for the one-night special appearance.

Kauffman’s Port career spans decades likewise and to date, including his most recent victory in June at the oval, the Mifflintown veteran flyer owns 129 career sprint victories at his home track, a number that no other driver can match.

Kauffman began his racing career in sprints at Port Royal and continues to call it home today on a weekly basis although he broke away at times for national campaigning during the 1980s and 1990s.

His current mount, the Heckman No. 8H sprint car will be on display prior to the Dream Race on August 6 where Kauffman will be signing autographs along with Dyer.

More news regarding the growing 2011 “Living Legends” Dream Race 5 is in the offing.

The race itself will go 40 laps, paying $12,000 to win along with a full B Main purse. At least $700 will be awarded for fast time with heats paying $300 to win.
