SPENCER, MITCHELL AND FAAS BATTLE FOR USAC/CRA TITLE AND SPOT IN LEGENDS OF ASCOT MATCH RACE!

By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, October 6, 2011) When the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday on opening day of the Southern California Fair, the top three drivers in the series will have two separate fights to battle over. The USAC/CRA championship and the final spot in the November 4th Legends of Ascot Match Race. Spectator gates will open at 11:00 AM and the heat races will begin in 2:00 PM. The B and A mains will start at 7:00. Tickets to the fair are just $8.00 at the gate and only $5.00 if ordered online (http://socalfair.com/ticket_info.html) through Friday. Fair tickets get fans into the races free.

Media, attached to this release you will find photos of Mike Spencer #50, Matt Mitchell #37 and Nic Faas #4. Please feel free to publish them and if you publish, please give photo credit to Doug Allen.

Heading into Saturday’s race, the fight for the series championship is alive and well as the top three are separated by a mere 39-points. Mike Spencer, the three-time defending USAC/CRA champion from Temecula, leads Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell by 30-points. Nic Faas, who resides in Huntington Beach, is only 9-points behind Mitchell. After Saturday’s race, the fight for the series crown will still have six rounds to go. Three of the remaining races will be at The PAS, two will take place at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona and the remaining one will be at Giant Chevrolet King’s Speedway in Hanford, California.

While those six races will decide the 2011 series champion, Saturday’s Southern California Fair opener will be the last shot for the three to get into the Legend’s of Ascot Match Race on November 4th during the 16th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals. With a winner’s share of the purse that is already more than $8,000.00 for just 16-laps around the famous Riverside County clay oval, the LOAMR will match the top two in points in the Amsoil USAC/CRA Series, the top two in Amsoil USAC National Series and one wild card driver. Already seeded into the event from the National Series are four time USAC National champion Levi Jones of Olney, Illinois and defending Oval Nationals Champion Chris Windom of Canton, Illinois.

“Saturday’s show will be extremely important to Mike Spencer, Matt Mitchell and Nic Faas,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said. “Not only are they fighting for the series championship, but also a shot to get into the Legends of Ascot Match Race. Thus far in 2011, we have hosted seven Amsoil USAC/CRA races and those three have accounted for all seven of the wins. Their scrap for the championship and to get into the Legends of Ascot Match Race is going to be very interesting on Saturday.”

Spencer, who turned 30 in early September, has four of this year’s wins at The PAS. Mitchell, 24, has two wins while Faas, who celebrated his 22nd birthday last Thursday, has one.

Faas’ win, which came two weeks ago in the Mark Alexander silver #4, was the most dominating performance in quite some time on the half-mile clay oval. He won the Dean Thompson Award by sweeping the show with the fast qualifying time (by nearly a half second), winning his heat race and the main event.

“Nic Faas’ performance at last race was total domination,” Kazarian said. “I cannot remember the last time I saw a car going that fast on our track. He seemed to get faster as the night wore on and just walked away from everyone in the main event.”
