Tuesdays with TMAC – WoO Next for Huset’s Champ!

By Bill w

September 11, 2012 – Terry McCarl made official his seventh career Huset’s Speedway championship last Sunday night at the 1/3-mile oval near Brandon, South Dakota. A fifth place finish in the season ender will set up a pair of dates with the World of Outlaws series this weekend for the TMAC Motorsports #24 team.

For the fourth event in a row, TMAC set quick time. The streak encompasses three nights and Huset’s and one at Knoxville. “The car is really going good for qualifying lately,” he says. “We were solid in the heat too.”

A third place heat run locked TMAC into the invert. The draw was not kind, but he charged forward. “They drew a ten,” he says. “People complain about the track not being good up there, but it was almost too good. It was pretty fast and wet. We ran before the 360’s and street stocks instead of being last out there.”

TMAC found his machine could run anywhere. “Everyone was fast,” he says. “Actually, I got going well. Both the top and bottom were good on the racetrack. I especially got going on the bottom. We were able to get by (Mark) Dobmeier for fifth and the yellow came out.”

The bottom groove went away. “Someone had got down in the wet stuff and threw it in my groove,” says TMAC. “That basically took my lane from me. That made it difficult. We had a restart and we had to go back to sixth behind Mark. We got him back on the restart.”

The Altoona, Iowa driver chased down the leaders. “I think we were a little faster than the guys in front of us, but everyone was kind of rocketing around the top,” says TMAC. “There wasn’t a whole lot we could do.”

He would settle for fifth, while son Austin narrowly missed out on the runner-up spot in the season standings. “We did our best, and finalized the championship there,” says TMAC. “Austin was running right behind me there for a while, and actually was underneath me a time or two. He was running about seventh. Another car got down in the water, and spun out. Austin got into him, and smashed the wing and messed his car up. He did a hell of a job to keep it going, but he dropped back to twelfth and lost second place by one point.”

The championship was TMAC’s seventh, a number matched by this year’s Knoxville Raceway championship. “To win two championships was incredible for us,” he says. “I don’t care where you are or what you are doing.”

Action with the Outlaws is Friday and Saturday. “We’ll be going up a little early to the Clay County Fair in Spencer,” says TMAC. “We’ll be showing our cars at the Gillund Enterprises/Justice Brothers booth on Friday. We’ll race there with the World of Outlaws that night. We have a lot of sponsors there in that area. We’ll go on to Deer Creek on Saturday.”

Chris Delong asks: What has made Huset’s so special for you?

TMAC Answers: It is a real demanding racetrack. On one night, it can be super-aggressive and rough on the top. Then it can be slick where you need finesse and need to run the bottom like Bobby Allen or the top like Tim Kaeding. Then it may lay rubber…all in the same night. It is really an awesome racetrack. If I had one place to take my kid to learn to drive it would be there. It is a high speed chess game there. You have to be ready for anything.

This Month in TMAC History!

On September 9, 1995, TMAC won at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. TMAC also won in July of that year at 34, besting Dennis Moore Jr., Skip Jackson, Johnny Herrera and Brent Antill. In 2004 he beat the Sprint Invaders on the same 3/8 mile oval, driving Mark Burch’s #1m to finish ahead of Ryan Jamison, John Schulz, Bobby Hawks and Bobby Mincer.
