Rico Abreu spent his weekend at the Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, AZ with the USAC National Midget Series, and after rain washed out Friday’s event, Abreu came back on Saturday night and scored a third place finish, the best of his USAC career to date.
With 29 cars on hand for the Western Classic, the St. Helena, CA pilot kicked the night off by timed his Keith Kunz Racing/Toyota/TRD No. 67K in with the second fastest lap of the night during qualifications.
Scoring a third place finish in his heat, Abreu took the direct transfer into the 30-lap feature event, where he would roll off in the third row.
A trio of cautions slowed the first eight laps of the feature event, as Abreu ran in the fifth spot. When the race got into the final 22-lap green flag run, Abreu hung with some of the top drivers in the country, as he worked up into the fourth spot, and began battling with Tracy Hines for third.
Trading the spot several times with the veteran shoe, Abreu was able to hold him off and record his best career finish with the USAC National Midget Series, a third place finish.
“We had a great car tonight, and it feels great to be up here on the podium,” he said. “To have all three Kunz cars in the top five, (Kyle Larson 1, Bryan Clauson 5), it’s a true testament to how strong this team is.”
Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt,, Outlaw Wings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.
ON TAP: Rico will now return to action at the Western World Finals in Arizona November 15-17th again at the Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, AZ.
