Though he is dominantly a non-wing driver, Matt Mitchell has thrown wings on from time to time, and he did that this past weekend and took on the World of Outlaws.

“I didn’t have any goals of going up and winning any races,” he said. “I will put wings on to ultimately help me race non wing cars. Winged cars are tough, and really help me with my reaction time he said.”

Still recovering from a nasty wreck in Terre Haute, IN, Mitchell plans to make several more winged starts this spring.

“I’m not quite where I was before my wreck, and the winged stuff will help me get back to where I was,” he continued. “I’m determined to get back where I was, and will do whatever it takes. We will make a few winged starts this year in an effort to get better.”

Making the long haul up north, Mitchell was at the Stockton 99 Speedway on Friday night, where he timed in 36th fastest out of the 44 cars assembled.

Heat race action saw Mitchell score a ninth place finish, which put him in the night’s Last Chance Showdown.

Starting 13th, Mitchell got his elbows up, and showed his versatility as he worked his way up to an eighth place finish.

Though it was not a transfer, Mitchell was pleased.

“It’s fun to get out and run a winged car. We were not very good, but in the B, we got going and passed some cars,” he said.

Friday night the Matt Mitchell Racing team were at the Silver Dollar Speedway, where he made his winged debut several years ago, to take part in the Mini Gold Cup.

A 38th quickest time in qualifying, put him scratch on the field in his heat, where he would finish.

Being in the C, Mitchell would not make the transfer spot, and ended his night early.

“As a competitor it is disappointing to not run well, but in all reality, to come take on the best in the world, with very limited starts, I’m just happy we were not completely off the pace, and rolled it in the trailer.”

Matt Mitchell Racing would like to thank, A.R.T. Enterprises, MPD Racing, Parker Performance Engines, Caliagua, Bell Helmets, and Hedman Hedders for their support in 2013.
