Attica, OH — (April 6, 2013) — At the end of last year Sheldon Haudenschild showed he was going to be a force to be reckoned with at Attica Raceway Park. Though he crashed while battling for the lead then, he came out swinging in 2013 and last week scored a second place at the track against the All Stars. On Saturday, the Wooster, Ohio native would take the lead on lap 14 and would hold off Dale Blaney – who beat him the week before – to score his first ever Attica 410 sprint victory on Fisher Performance Night.
“Again Ripper had the car awesome and I’m really comfortable right now and I feel like I can do this every weekend. It’s pretty awesome,” said Haudenschild beside his Triple X/Creative Renovations/Ham Signs/Emory Transmissions/Wintermyer Auto Salvage/Arrowhead Outdoor Services backed #93. “I knew Blaney would have a hard time passing me in one and two because of how fast the top was and he couldn’t pass me on the top of three and four because it was too slick. It was a hard track to pass on. I got by the O9 (Craig Mintz) for the lead and I felt good after that and had a clear track.”
“Happy birthday to Dad (Jac) tomorrow…he’s getting old,” joked Sheldon who is 19.
The late model feature was fantastic, with four and five cars battling for the lead throughout the 25 laps. Dona Marcoullier of Houghton Lake, Michigan, would battle side by side with Jon Henry the last five laps before driving to the checkered, the second career win of his career at Attica.
“This is a brand new race car…this is the second night out in it. I can’t thank Doug Findley (owner) and the crew and Dowker Engines,” said Marcoullier. “The first start there I went to touch the brakes and shut the car off. I had to regroup…the car was just awesome.”
In the 305 sprint feature, defending track champion Nate Dussel survived several cautions that kept him from getting into lapped traffic and cruised to his sixth career Attica win.
“It helps to start up front but the guys had the car really good. The cautions helped keep me out of traffic and that was a huge help because everyone was racing on the bottom. We bought this GF1 chassis from Craig Mintz and it feels fast…I think we’re going to have a great year,” said Dussel beside his Berrier Fabrications/Kylynn Manufacturing/Gressman Powersports/Conrad Transport/Dussel Welding backed #1.
Cap Henry and Haudenschild would bring the field to the green for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature. Henry would lead the first lap with Haudenschild racing to his inside while fourth place starter Craig Mintz ran right on their rear bumpers. Mintz would take second on lap two and would drive into the lead a lap later. Haudenschild drove into second on lap four and immediately raced under Mintz to challenge for the lead. Mintz and Haudenschild wild battle side by side over the next 7 laps as they raced into traffic by lap 10. A Brian Lay spin on lap 13 would halt the action.
When the green reappeared, Mintz and Haudenschild would continue their exciting race with Haudenschild leading lap 12 but Mintz regaining the top spot as they ran side by side. Haudenschild would grab the lead on lap 14 with Mintz staying to his outside.
With 15 laps in the books – halfway – Haudenschild lead Mintz, who now had his hands full with Blaney who was behind the wheel of the Tony Kennedy #14k machine. Meanwhile there was a tremendous battle for fourth between Travis Philo, Chris Andrews, Byron Reed and Henry. Blaney would take second from Mintz on lap 17 and closed on Haudenschild who had found the back of the pack with 10 circuits remaining. The caution would fly on lap 21 for a Cole Duncan spin with Haudenschild leading Blaney, Andrews, Mintz, Philo, Reed and a closing Caleb Griffith up from 13th starting spot.
Andrews would slip up on lap 23 and would stop with front end problems, bringing out the caution. The restart order was Haudenschild, Blaney, Mintz, Philo, Reed, Griffith, Henry and 16th place starter D.J. Foos. The final caution would fly on lap 27 for a Stuart Brubaker spin. With the clear track, Haudenschild would blast to the top side of turns one and two and would pull away from Blaney.
Haudenschild would drive to the win over Blaney, Mintz, Griffith and Philo.
In the 25-lap Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model main, Chris Keller and Eric Spangler would bring the field to the green with Spangler earning the lead over Jon Henry, Keller, John Bores, Matt Miller and Ryan Markham. You couldn’t fit a piece of paper between the top four cars when the caution flew on lap three for a Chad Poorman spin. On the restart it was a tremendous battle up front between Spangler, Keller, Henry and Miller as they often raced three wide through the corners.
Keller would drive into the lead by a nose on lap six with Spangler, Henry and Miller continuing the fantastic race. With 8 laps scored, Marcoullier had joined the fray. Over the next eight laps it was literally a five car battle for the lead with Keller continuing to lead by a nose over Spangler with Henry, Miller and Marcoullier racing to their outside and on their rear bumpers. Henry would take second on lap 10 with Marcoullier moving into third. Keller, Henry and Marcoullier ran three wide over each lap until the caution flew with 10 laps to go for a stalled Spangler. On the restart Henry grabbed the lead over Keller, Marcoullier, Miller, Markham and 17th starter Ryan Missler.
With Henry out front, Miller took second on lap 16, but Marcoullier returned the favor a lap later. With five laps to go Marcoullier got under Henry to take the lead with Miller racing to their outside. Marcoullier and Henry would race side by side the remaining laps. Marcoullier won by half a car length over Henry, Miller, Keller and Missler.
Dussel and Jimmy Colvin would lead the field to the green in the 25-lap Foster’s Auto Body 305 sprint feature. Everyone went to the bottom groove and Dussel took the lead over Colvin, Jordan Ryan, Dustin Stroup, Jamie Miller and Dustin Dinan. The caution flew on lap four for Matt Fackler and Eric Duposki spins. On the restart Paul Weaver would loop it out and on the ensuing restart Jamie Miller spun, collecting Seth Schneider. When the green reappeared Dussel would pull away from Stroup, Colvin, Ryan, Dinan and Tyler Gunn.
On lap seven, Duposki and Fackler would spin again. As he did for the other restarts, Dussel would pull away over Stroup, Colvin, Ryan, Dinan and Gunn. Ryan would take third on lap 10, bringing Dinan into fourth as the caution flew for a Nate Reeser spin. Dussel would again pull away from Stroup as Ryan and Dinan battled for third. Dinan would take the third position on lap 12 and began pressuring Stroup for the runner-up spot.
Dussel would race into lapped traffic by the 16th circuit, but Stroup, Dinan, Ryan and Colvin could not close. The final caution would fly on lap 18 for Ricky Peterson who spun in water created when Dinan got side ways, but gathered his machine back up but knocked the radiator hose off. The restart order was Dussel, Stroup, Dinan, Ryan, Colvin and Steve Rando.
Dussel would drive a smooth race on the bottom to pull away for his sixth career Attica win over Stroup, Dinan, Ryan and Colvin.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 12 for UUI/Bazell Race Fuels Night with the UMP Late Models, 305 sprints and dirt trucks in action.
