Fremont OH – (May 1, 2013) – Race fans in Northwest Ohio don’t get many opportunities to see traditional, non-wing sprint cars. They will on Saturday, May 4th as the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series opens their series with the biggest event in BOSS history at Fremont Speedway.
The first ever Mike Hensel Memorial – run in honor of the late Mike Hensel who competed regularly at Fremont Speedway in the 1970s – will pay the winner of the 33 lap feature $3,300. The event will pay $300 just to start the A-main which is also being co-sanctioned by the Michigan Traditional Sprint (MTS) series.
Also in competition on Smith Family Foods Night will be the winged Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints, the AAA Ohio Auto Club Dirt Trucks and the Surfin’ Sweepstakes Sports Compacts. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults; $12 for senior citizens; $8 for teens ages 11-16; with kids 10 and under getting in free. Pit passes are $30 each.
New for the 2013 season will be heat race bonus money, with the top three finishers in each heat taking home $50, $30 and $20 respectively. There are several other bonus awards.
BOSS is an Ohio-based regional touring series which has 14 races scheduled in 2013. Defending BOSS champion is Dustin Smith of Russiaville, Indiana, as he held off Gibsonburg, Ohio’s Tony Beaber for the title. Other series drivers include Kirk Jeffries of Westerville, Ohio; Aaron Middaugh of Polk, Ohio, Brandon Spithaler of Evans City, Pa., Chuck Wilson of Perrysburg, Ohio, Lewie Christian of West Jefferson, Ohio, Mark Cassella of Wierton, W. Va. And Steve Irwin of Fenton, Mich.
Several other drivers have expressed plans to join BOSS including teammates Dallas Hewitt and Derek Hastings, Mike Miller, Adam Miller, Skip Dougherty and Chad Wilson.
“We think there will be over 30 cars to compete in this event. Besides the BOSS teams, we are confident some of our 410 and 305 teams will take the wings off to compete,” said Rich Farmer, Fremont Speedway Promoter. “We are hoping some of the Indiana teams will come over…this purse is a lot bigger than they race for normally.”
When BOSS visited Fremont last season, it was the track’s regular 305 sprint winged drivers who took the tops off and dominated the event. Fostoria, Ohio’s Jamie Miller, who took a tumble last Saturday at Fremont, won the feature event over fellow 305 driver and three time division champion Stuart Brubaker will Beaber, Irwin and 305 driver Roger Shammo rounded out the top five.
