Santa Maria, CA — (May 5, 2013) — On Saturday, May 11th, the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will make their first of six appearances at Kings Speedway in Hanford. The “2nd Annual Southwest Contractors Billet Cup” will feature a special point’s format with a fully inverted 30-lap main event paying $1,500-to-win and $200-to-start. In addition, an extra $8,350 point fund with $2,000 awarded to the highest point driver will be up for grabs. With over $16,000 available in total purses and contingencies, the “Billet Cup” will have one of the biggest paydays of the campaign.
Showcasing a format similar to the popular “Trophy Cup,” Promoters Chris Kearns and Scott Woodhouse are offering $3,500 to the driver that can win from the rear of the field. For placing last in the feature, that driver will get a minimum payout of $400. Each driver that attends the special event will earn 50 championship points and the entry fee is $50. Both the main event purse and point fund are listed at the end of this release.
Race points will be earned at every race of the “Billet Cup.” The program will start off with a qualifying session as drivers record the faster of two green flag laps. Heat races will be 10-laps, inverting the top six cars in qualifying points. Qualifiers featuring 12-laps of action will follow, inverting the top eight cars in points. The top eighteen cars in points after the qualifiers are locked into the main event, with the high point driver starting twenty-second. A 15-lap semi-main will lineup the remaining cars by points for the final four transfer spots to the feature. The driver ranking twenty-second in points will start on the pole of the main event, twenty-first will start second and so forth down the line.
Last year, the “Billet Cup” and its special format provided one of the most action packed events of the season. Richard Vander Weerd won the feature after starting seventeenth at Santa Maria. 5-Time USAC/CRA Champion Mike Spencer was second after starting ninth and Ryan Bernal raced to third from thirteenth. Bud Kaeding scored fourth from eighteenth and “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. claimed fifth after starting sixteenth. “Showtime” Danny Sheridan placed sixth in the main event after starting fifteenth.
To date, four different drivers have scored feature wins in 2013. Ryan Bernal and Bryan Clauson lead all drivers with four victories and Richard Vander Weerd has two wins. R.J. Johnson won a Winter Challenge event at Canyon Speedway Park on February 2nd.
The USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will return to action on Saturday, May 11th, at Hanford’s Kings Speedway for the “2nd Annual Billet Cup.” The popular event will also showcase the winged Rebel Cup Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, IMCS Stock Cars, and Vintage Cars. Located on the Kings County Fairgrounds at 801 South 10th Avenue, more event information can be found at www.kingsspeedway.net or calling (559) 584-RACE (7223).
