Ohsweken, ONT — (August 14, 2013) — Ohsweken Speedway’s 18th season of racing continues this Friday, August 16 when Metal Works presents “Corr/Pak vs. SOS” night. This week’s event features the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars versus the Southern Ontario Sprints tour, plus Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS VS. SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS
This Friday features the third of three challenge events this season between traveling Sprint Car series and the regulars of the weekly Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, with a $1,700 prize on the line for the winner of the 25 lap feature. The Ontario-based Southern Ontario Sprints tour drivers are the foes for Corr/Pak drivers defending home turf this time, although some drivers do race with both groups, and will be earning valuable points in both championship chases.
Chris Jones of Demorestville, Ontario took over at the top of the SOS standings by winning his third consecutive SOS feature last Saturday at Brighton Speedway. Jamie Collard is currently 2nd in the SOS standings and just 3 points behind Jones, followed by Mitch Brown, Keith Dempster, Warren Mahoney, Glenn Styres, Bob Crawford, Tyler Rand, and a 10th place tie between Dain Naida and Brad Lodge. Other SOS drivers expected on Friday include Brad Lodge, Chris Durand, Kyle Fraser, Frank Baranowski, and Jim Munsie.
Glenn Styres won the opening round for the SOS on May 18 at Brighton Speedway, while Jamie Collard won at Brighton on June 8, and Chris Jones won at Brighton on July 13 and August 10, and South Buxton Raceway on August 3.
Jim Huppunen will lead Ohsweken’s weekly Sprint Car drivers in defending their home turf, as the 2011 Corr/Pak champion won his first feature of the season on Friday night. Huppunen currently sits atop the Corr/Pak standings, followed by Jamie Collard, Mitch Brown, Shane Ross, Todd Hoddick, Derek Jonathan, Chris Steele, a 9th place tie between Glenn Styres and Jamie Turner, and Keith Dempster. Tom Huppunen, Havard Daniels, Dain Naida, Conor Mahoney, Steve Goldner, and Mikey Kruchka are also among the regular Corr/Pak racers expected to compete this Friday.
Glenn Styres won the Corr/Pak features on May 17, May 24, and June 14, while Kyle Patrick won the Corr/Pak feature on June 7, Jason Barney won the Corr/Pak vs. PST feature on June 21, Jamie Collard won the Corr/Pak feature on July 5, Steve Poirier won the Corr/Pak vs. ESS feature on July 12, Mitch Brown won the Corr/Pak feature on July 26, Shane Stewart won the Northern Summer Nationals on July 29, and Jim Huppunen won the Corr/Pak feature on August 9.
Warren Mahoney enters the weekend as the most recent winner in Sprint Car competition in the province, as the former SOS champion won without a wing with the Ontario Topless Sprints at Humberstone Speedway on Sunday night. Warren’s father Dick will not be in competition this Friday due to a crash in that same Sunday event, along with another the previous night at Brighton.
Friday’s race is a full points event for both groups, and will also serve as the SOS qualifier for the TJSlideways.com Ohsweken Shootout, which is scheduled to kick off Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend on Friday, September 13.
AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Last Friday was busy for the Thunder Stock racers, with a regularly scheduled event, plus a make up feature from the July 19 postponement. Lee Winger won the make up feature, while Wyatt Van Wart got his second win of the season in the regular feature.
Lee Winger has moved into a tie for the lead in the points standings with Jim Lampman, while Cory Turner is now third, followed by Bryce Richardson, and Mike Thorne.
Karl Sault took over at the top of the Rookie of the Year standings, but his lead is just 11 points over Dave Silverthorn, Jr.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
The Mini Stocks will be “back to normal” with a 15 lap feature this week after last Friday’s 42 lap Art Hill Memorial race. Davey Boughton is the current points leader, followed by Alex Schuts, Laura Hughes, Jason Lungaro, and Chase Hess.
Davey Boughton also leads the Rookie of the Year standings, followed by Alex Schuts.
GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Dusty DeBoer had to borrow a car just to run the Bomber feature last week, but it paid off as he won the feature and took the points lead as a result. Tim DeBoer is just 2 points behind, followed by Max Chechalk, Brady Longboat, and the #6 team of Wayde and Mark Thorne.
