Gregg Comes Up Just Short at Marysville Raceway Park

PETERSEN MEDIA

The Marysville Raceway Park seemed to be a love-hate venue for Andy Gregg in 2013. During the season opening event back in March, Gregg had a very strong car and looked well on his way to victory until he had ignition issues. During a Civil War Race there earlier this year, a flat tire knocked him out of  a battle for the lead, and on Saturday night a last-lap pass dropped him to the second spot.

“I have always ran well, and done well at Marysville, but this year it did me dirty,” Gregg joked. “We were fast every time we were there, and should have won a couple races there, but it just wasn’t meant to be, I guess.”

Piloting the Scott Russell owned No.14R, Gregg started the night off in style, as he earned the quick time award in qualifying, putting him in the third row of his heat race.

Scoring a second place finish, Gregg transferred to the feature event, where he started on the front row.

When the green light’s flickered it was Gregg jumping out to an early lead, as he navigated the racy Marysville Raceway Park surface.

Out front, Gregg was in command of the race as he was never seriously challenged.

A restart with 8-to-go bunched the leaders up, but Gregg was strong, and pulled away.

With laps winding down, thick traffic came into play, allowing Sean Becker to slowly close in on the Placerville, CA driver.

With the white flag waiving, Gregg looked to be well on his way to another win, but Becker had other ideas.

Entering turn three and four, Becker let it all hang out, as he went around Gregg exiting turn four to take the win, as Gregg settled for a second place finish.

“I hate it for my guys, but that was a one heck of a finish,” he said. “Sean is one of the most fun people to race with, and I congratulate his guys on the win. My guys gave me a great car, and we came up a little short.”
