FRESNO, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2013) – Dominic Scelzi is set to make his debut in a nonwing 360 sprint car on Saturday.
Scelzi will pilot a race car for Cory Kruseman during the season finale at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, Calif., which will mark his second time ever to the track and second time in a nonwing sprint car.
“I want to thank Cory for giving me an opportunity on Saturday,” Scelzi said. “I’m just hoping to learn a lot. I’d really like to have a top 10 or a top five, but I really don’t have much expectation. I’m just going there to get laps and have fun.”
Scelzi scored a runner-up finish in his inaugural nonwing event, which was in the 410 division at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., on July 12. Scelzi led 21 circuits of the 30-lap feature before ending with a second-place result.
“It was really fun,” he said. “I had a lot of fun running nonwing. I look forward to getting more experience under my belt. You have to run it really sideways. You kinda have to race with the right rear. You can’t really hammer the throttle. You have to nurse the car the whole time. It’s hard, but I feel like being able to come from a wing where you have to drive it harder is easier. It’s night and day different, but it’s really fun.”
Scelzi’s only race at Ventura Raceway was last year in a midget.
“We were really, really fast, but we had a mechanical failure in the feature running second,” he said.
