Scelzi Amped for Chili Bowl Debut With Cole Wood Racing Next Week

FRESNO, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2014) – Dominic Scelzi realizes the opportunity that is front of him next week.

Scelzi will make his debut at the 28th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire at Tulsa Expo Raceway in Tulsa, Okla., where he will pilot a Cole Wood Racing entry at the premier midget event next Tuesday through Saturday.

“I’m a big-time underdog going into the Chili Bowl for my first time,” Scelzi said. “I feel now more than ever I can really prove myself and possibly have a big upset. If I can make it into my main on Thursday night and run in the top 10, that would make a phenomenal week no matter what goes on Saturday.”

With almost 300 competitors, the drivers are split into four qualifying nights with approximately 70 racers each night. Scelzi’s qualifying night is Thursday with the finale on Saturday.

“There’s probably 40 guys just on Thursday night who are definitely capable of winning the qualifying night as well as Saturday night,” he said. “I have my work cut out for me. But it’s a race car and we’re on dirt. The same properties apply. I need to keep my head on, be aggressive, be smart and hopefully pass a lot of cars.”

Scelzi made his lone start in a midget last November at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, Calif., where he powered from 17th to a fourth-place finish in the main event. He also competed in a practice night last Monday at Lemoore Raceway in Lemoore, Calif., with the other drivers in Cole Wood Racing.

“I’m really prepared,” Scelzi said. “When you race against guys that race King of the West and World of Outlaws you have to be able to turn on the switch if you want to be competitive at all. There’s been times I’ve had to turn on the wick and I don’t think it’ll be any different at the Chili Bowl.

“I really want to thank Cole Wood Racing and the Wood family for the opportunity and hopefully I can use this opportunity to gain some exposure. At the moment I’m still looking for a winged 360 sprint car ride next season in California.”
