ALVIN, Texas (March 31, 2014) – After nearly three months off since the Tulsa Shootout, Cody Freeman returned to the track on fire last Saturday.

Literally.

As the team unloaded his restricted winged micro sprint from the trailer at Gulf Coast Speedway, a battery sparked a small fire that was quickly extinguished.

“We almost burned it down before hitting the track,” Freeman joked. “What a way to start the season.”

Following what turned out to be an amusing moment, Freeman put together an outstanding performance as he competed in a new car.

“Race-wise it was a good weekend to shake the car down and feel it out,” he said. “It was our first night in a brand new car and a brand new engine package. I was extremely happy and extremely pleased. It’s the best I’ve felt inside the car. It has a lot more response out of it.”

Freeman finished second in his first heat race and third in his second heat, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for the 15-lap main event.

The polesitter took off from the start with Freeman in tow. There was one caution just before the midpoint of the main event, which allowed him to close up to the rear bumper of the leader.

“I had a great restart,” he said. “We were just geared a little too high for that small of a track. We didn’t have the pull needed. We didn’t reach our target RPM range.”

Freeman powered to the runner-up performance to record his first podium finish of the season.

Next up, Freeman will make his debut at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas, this Saturday.
