MERCED, Calif. (March 31, 2014) – Dominic Scelzi is looking forward to his inaugural visit to Calistoga Speedway this weekend after a rough night last Friday.

Scelzi and the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series will invade the scenic half-mile track this Saturday and Sunday.

“I’m really hoping we have all the bugs worked out,” he said. “It’ll be my second time on a half mile. I’m excited to get more time on a big track.”

Scelzi was plagued by a mechanical issue last Friday with the World of Outlaws at Merced Speedway, where he fought an engine problem from the start.

“We unloaded and pushed the car off to put heat in the engine and it started right up,” he said. “As soon as I pulled into the pits and knocked it out of gear it died. We tried to refire the engine and it popped and sputtered and wouldn’t fire.”

The team changed the mag, which didn’t fix the issue. Therefore, the team decided to change engines.

“Unfortunately, we missed hot laps,” he said. “We made it out for qualifying, but we didn’t know we needed to change the gear for the motor. We got behind the eight ball and stayed behind the eight ball.”

Scelzi timed in 29th quickest, which started him eighth in a heat race. He picked up a position to finish seventh – two spots out of advancing to the main event.

“It was really, really difficult to pass,” he said. “Everybody was running the bottom.”

Scelzi then rallied from ninth to sixth place in the Last Chance Showdown and was in a battle for one of the four transfer positions before he spun on the final lap to finish 10th.

Saturday’s scheduled event at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., was cancelled because of rain. This weekend’s races at Calistoga Speedway will mark his second career trip to a half-mile track.
