Starks was one of the final cars to qualify on the half-mile oval, which began to slow down throughout time trials during the Bob Weikert Memorial.

“The track really went away,” he said. “The wind was blowing pretty bad. We got way out of whack and sideways. We basically threw our first lap away and had to run a conservative second lap.”

Starks qualified 28th quickest, which started him on the inside of the fourth row of his heat race.

“I don’t think I gained a position or lost a position,” he said. “It was slick and on the bottom. It was tough to pass.”

Starks placed seventh in his heat race to miss a lock-in position by two spots. That relegated him to the B Main, which he started on the inside of the fifth row.

“We were rolling pretty good in the B Main,” he said. “We made a lot of changes and tightened it up because it was so slick. I think I ran the whole race with my left front on the inside guardrail. I just picked guys off like that. It was completely slick all the way across the race track. My car would roll right around the bottom.”

Starks charged from ninth to a third-place result in the consolation race, which transferred him to the main event.

“Before the main they watered the top a little bit,” he said. “The racing was on the bottom for the first five laps and then the top came in until about the last five laps. We just picked a few guys off. It’s just tough when you know you’re that fast and on the track where everybody is so equal. It was a tough track, but it was something I’m not usually used to.”

After starting 23rd, Starks ended with a 19th-place result.

“All in all, we had a nice car,” he said. “It was good to make the show.”

Starks is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series for the third straight season.

“Eldora is really fun,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite tracks. It’s definitely the most intimidating track in the U.S. It’s one of those tracks that separates the men from the boys.”
