After a long and cold winter, thunder returned to Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio.  Despite the chilly weather conditions a great crowd was on hand to usher in the 11th season at the 1/3 high-banked dirt oval.  The pit area was buzzing as well with drivers busting out their new rides for the 2014 season.  Over 95 cars signed in amongst the five classes all trying to make it to the Best Performance Motorsports Victory Lane.

In the Post Agri Service UMP Modifieds, the 00K of Kyle Peterson and the M1G of Matt Twining led the field to the green flag off of the 4th corner.  Randy Lines won the drag race into turn one and took over the top spot while the rest of the field doubled up behind him.  Turn two seemed to be the problem spot for all competitors as the first caution was thrown on lap 5.  Kyle Peterson, who started on the pole, turned his modified around and brought out the first caution.  He was scored in second at the time of the incident and was sent to the rear of the field.  Green flag racing didn’t last long as a second caution came out on lap 8 for the M1G of Matt Twining who also turned his car around in turn two.  Like Peterson, Twining was scored in the runner-up position at the time of the caution.  Another two laps passed with yet another caution in the same area of turn two.  The 10H of Brad Hess found himself turned in the reverse direction and sent to the rear of the field from his fifth starting spot.  On the restart, Lines won the drag race again but only held the spot for 4 laps until the final yellow flag of the night was thrown for the 00K of Kyle Peterson.  Peterson was then sent to the pits for violating the two-spinout rule.  The final restart came with 6 laps left on the board and the 22T of Tony Anderson hungry for a win.  Anderson was able to close the gap after Lines got a great restart but was not able to finish allowing Randy Lines to pick up the win.  Tony Anderson finished in second with Brian Post in third.

The Buckeye Machine Non Wing Sprints took the track with a strong field of twenty for their twenty-five lap A-Main.  The feature started off on a rough note as the 25B of Mark Blausey went upside by the entrance of the pit area as cars were being pushed off for the A-Main.  The red flag was thrown and Blausey climbed out under his own power.  Reports say Blausey was trying to get some heat is his tires when he made light contact with another competitor that sent up the banking and upside down.  The car was removed with a wreaker as cars were pushed off again.  Jimmy Snead and Andy Conley brought the field to Adam Brimmer’s green flag with Conley winning the drag race into turn two.  It did not take long for turn two to act up again bringing out the only caution for the 41J of Jeremy Powley.  Powley was pushed off and racing resumed.  On the restart track officials noticed a bright red glow coming from the wheel of Jerry Duposki.  It was confirmed to be a hot rotor and Duposki was alerted via his one-way communication radio.  Back at the front of the field, the 23S of Kyle Simon and the 2B of Mike Dunlap began to catch Andy Conley who was beginning to get caught up in lap traffic.  After numerous lead changes and slide jobs, Kyle Simon came away with victory, Mike Dunlap in second, and Andy Conley in third.

In the Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, twenty-two competitors signed in with eighteen of those taking the green flag of the 20 lap feature event.  Micheal Helterbran and Riley VanHise led the field to green flag with Helterbran winning the drag race off turn one.  The sole female competitor, Becca Stiefel and veteran driver Rod Henning began closing in on Helterbran early in the A-Main.  The 28H of Rod Henning, who was sitting a few positions back, watched the action unfold and waited to make his move on the leader.  As the halfway signal was given to the field, Henning began to make his move on the lead pack.  He took off like a rocket ship and slid his way right through the lead pack.  Time was running out for Henning as he set his sites on the leader Helterbran.  Henning managed to get right on Helterbran’s tail with the white flag in the air.  He tried one final slide job off of turn four to no success giving Michael Helterbran the victory.  Rod Henning finished in second with Becca Stiefel, 2013 runner-up in points, finishing in third.

The Block Insurance Tough Trucks put quite a show on for the fans on opening night as eighteen of the twenty competitors made the call for the 15 lap A-Main.  It was the 1J of JJ Butler and the 20K of Bill Keeler leading the field to the green flag.  In was evident into turn one that Hicks squared, Mike and Chris, got a great start and were ready to challenge for the top spot.  With JJ Butler beginning to fall back, that left enough room for Mike Hicks in the 33 to move into the top spot.  Once the front of the field got sported out, the action moved to the rear of the field where contact was made sending trucks three wide off of turn four.  This three wide battle continued into turn two until all of the trucks involved dropped into double file formation.  Mike Hicks came to the checkered flag and picked up the win.  The 20K of Bill Keeler finished second with Chris Hicks in the 71 finishing in third.  Block Insurance Tough Trucks is truly a family affair as the 316 of Ben Hower celebrated his anniversary at Waynesfield.  His sister decided to skip her senior prom and attend the races in her prom dress to watch her brother pick up a ninth place finish.

The night came to a close with the 15 lap Indian Lake Outfitters Compact A-Main.  The green flew with the 66Z of Matt McKinnon and the 518 Jordan Iiams leading the field to the green flag.  Iiams jumped out to the early lead moving McKinnon back to the second spot.  Both drivers had some company as the Yoder pair began to close the gap along with the 71 of Dustin Mobley.  After some mixing, Iiams held on to the top spot with Mobley jumping into the second from his sixth starting position.  One and two were running so well when Mobley’s car dropped off the pace and caused him to head pit side for service.  That gave both Harvey and David Yoder a chance to challenge for the lead one last time.  Both Harvey and David bounced off each other on the final laps trying to catch up with Iiams.  It was unsuccessful allowing Iiams to pick up the win.  Harvey Yoder finished in second with David Yoder in third.
