– HIGHLANDS, Texas (May 6, 2014) – Tyler Thomas ended his first weekend of the season in a sprint car on the right foot.

Thomas picked up the Hard Charger Award last Saturday at Battleground Speedway after rallying from 22nd to 12th during the ASCS Gulf South Region Ronald Laney Memorial.

“The car was fun to drive,” he said. “It was fast. It gives me some confidence for the next time we run a sprint car. I hope to get more time in one this season.”

In a Jeff Lutz owned car, Thomas started his weekend by finishing third in his heat race last Friday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas. That lined him up on the outside of the seventh row for the main event.

“The track was kind of one lane on the bottom,” he said. “The cushion was right on the wall. I started toward the back and began moving forward. I tried to make the top work and I got into the wall in turns three and four and knocked the right rear tire down.”

After working toward the top 10 in the opening laps, the impact relegated Thomas to a 19th-place result.

The team tackled Battleground Speedway on Saturday, when Thomas drew the pole position for his heat race.

“We were really quick,” he said. “The car was pretty much perfect. I think we were at least a half straightaway ahead. We took the white flag and going into turn one the right rear wheel hub broke. I just had a little bad luck in the heat race.”

Thomas was unable to finish his heat race and he was forced to start last in the main event.

“We had one yellow early and I tried using the bottom to get through traffic,” he said. “I used the bottom at the beginning of the race, but it didn’t take long before the bottom slicked way off. You had to roll pretty slow around there. The top was low enough and hooked up enough where it was too dominant. Once we got going the top was the preferred line. I needed some yellows to bunch the field back up.”

Thomas maneuvered to a 12th-place result.

“It was a little bit of a rough weekend,” he said. “If a little luck went our way we would have had a lot better results.”

Thomas is scheduled to return to midget action this weekend with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series on Friday at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill., and on Saturday at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill.
