– Traveling to the Atomic Speedway over the weekend for the Open Wheel Championships, Ian Madsen scored the McCann Memorial win from his 11th starting spot, before charging to 12th from his 26th starting spot during the 40-lap feature event.
“We were not very good on Friday night, but the boys worked hard, and we had a really fast racecar on Saturday night, and got a big win, and then made a good charge during the 40-lapper,” Ian Madsen said.
Lining up in the sixth row for the McCann Memorial, Madsen got off to a very nice start as he jumped up into the eighth spot on the first lap. Finding himself up in the second spot on the second lap when the red flag waived, Madsen continued to flex his muscles aboard the Nehring Construction/Team Kline Electric/Logan Contractors No. 18 machine, as he jumped into the fourth spot on the restart.
With the top-three breaking away on the restart, Madsen had his work cut out of him, but he ran excellent laps, as he chased them down, and quickly worked into the second spot.
With the race leader seemingly checked out, Madsen continued lay the hammer down, as he began cutting into the lead, as his pursuit of the leader excited the crowd. With just six laps to go, Madsen had significantly cut the lead down, and with just four markers remaining, the caution waived, bunching the field back up, putting Madsen on the leaders bumper.
When the race came back to life, Madsen and race leader, Rob Chaney, began exchanging the top spot, and with the white flag waiving, Madsen held the advantage, as he beat Chaney back to the checkered flag to score the win.
“We were awesome to come from 11th to win,” Madsen said. “We had the option of taking the money and calling it a night, but we didn’t tow 12-hours for that.”
By way of his win, Madsen declined the prize money, and took the 26th starting spot in the final 40-lap feature event of the night.
Just like he did during the McCann Memorial, Madsen moved forward seemingly at will, as he quickly got by five cars, and ran in the 21st spot.
Continuing to charge forward, the St. Marys, NSW driver ran in the 19th spot, when the caution flew on the 5th lap. As the race came back to life, Madsen continued to dig, as he worked up into the 16th spot on what was an exceptionally racey surface.
As the laps clicked off, Madsen was able to make big-time moves on Billy Balong, and the Haudenschild duo of Jac and Sheldon, as he took the checkered flag with a 12th place finish.
“It was really a great effort for this team,” he added. “We passed a ton of cars, and had a blast. Now we will see what we can do with the World of Outlaws at the World Finals.”
