CARLISLE, PA. – March 16, 2016 – David Gravel knew that a ride with CJB Motorsports meant that trips to victory lane would be expected. Riding a wave of momentum from a strong finish at Arizona Speedway, the Watertown, Conn. driver put together a strong night and led every lap of the A-feature to claim his first victory of the season at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. To make the night even sweeter as veteran Sammy Swindell skillfully navigated a narrow and fast race track to come home fifth and out both CJB drivers in the top-5.
“It’s really a relief to get our first win of the season this early,” said Gravel, driver of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We were looking for a balance at Vegas and really have found it here these past few nights.”
Rain washed away the first night of World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competition at the racy, one-third mile oval. The following night, Saturday, March 12th, was a banner night for Gravel and the team. The #5 car timed in second quick in time trials, won his heat race and raced well in the dash to start on the outside of the front row for the nights 35-lap feature.
“Our car was really good all night long,” said Gravel, who celebrated his 8th career Outlaws victory. “On the start, I was able to get the position heading into turn one on lap one and that was key. When I got into traffic, they closed up on me but when I could get into a clean track, I could start to build some of a lead. The track was narrow so you really had to pick and choose. I was pretty aggressive and that paid off for us. I’m just very proud of all my guys. We haven’t been together very long and I really hope this is just the first of many to come. It’s certainly a relief.”
While Gravel spent the majority of the night at the head of the class, Sammy Swindell faced a steeper path to success. The Germantown, Tenn. native timed in 24th, raced hard in his heat and then turned up the wick in the feature.
“We started on the front row of our heat race,” said Swindell, driver of the #1 Big Game Treestands, GoMuddy.com. “I don’t know what happened but the pole sitter didn’t get going and so it looked like we jumped the start. They moved me back a row and that prevented us from running high enough to get into the dash. Once the feature rolled around, the track was narrow but we worked out way to the front. When I saw an opening, I took it. That’s how we got up front. It also helped that our car was really nice for the feature.”
The duo continues their spring break tour out west with a pair of stops at the Stockton (Ca.) Dirt Track. Both drivers are seeking their first win at the 3/8th’s of a mile track.
“I’ve been to Stockton about thee times,” said Gravel. “You never really know what you are going to get when you get there. It’s been dry and wet the times I have been there. I’m looking forward to it though. I think we can get another win.”
“Stockton will be another good race track for us,” said Swindell of the track. “I really think we’re going to have good weekend.”
