ELMA, Wash. (June 6, 2016) – Trey Starks posted one of the most memorable passes of his racing career last Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway, where he capitalized on a slide job in turns three and four on the final lap to score the victory.

“I’ve been beat on the last lap, but I think this was the first time I’ve made the pass on the last lap,” he said.

Starks started the Summer Thunder Sprint Series event by qualifying eighth quickest. He then advanced from third to second place in a heat race to lock into the feature redraw.

“The track was pretty slick and was going away pretty quick in qualifying,” he said. “We didn’t lay down a very good lap. The times lined up basically where you went out. As long as we timed in the top eight it really didn’t matter because as long as we made it through the heat we knew we’d be in the redraw.”

Starks pulled the No. 5 during the random redraw to start the 30-lap main event on the inside of the third row.

“For the first 20 laps we weren’t that good,” he said. “We struggled to find the right spot to run and didn’t really have speed. We had a red with about 10 laps to go. The race felt like it went by so fast. We raced with a couple of cars from fourth to sixth and I made a mistake to drop back to sixth. We restarted sixth with a lapped car in between and our car just took off. I was running a little different line than everyone else was. Instead of running high I was running through the middle of the race track.”

Starks quickly advanced into the runner-up position before another caution with six laps remaining.

“I really didn’t want to see the caution at the time,” he said. “On the restart (the leader) covered my line on the bottom, which allowed Jason Solwold into the mix. It looked like he was going to take the lead. That put us back a couple of laps before we got back into second. We came for the white flag, but I wasn’t sure I was going to have enough. I looked to the inside of (the leader) and barely pulled even with him in turn two. He got a good run down the backstretch and got out on me two or three car lengths. I threw a big slider in turn three to see if it would stick. He lifted early and tried to cut underneath me. We got into the moisture on the exit and beat him to the line.”

The thrilling victory was the third triumph of the season for Starks and his first at Grays Harbor Raceway since April 2015.

Starks will return to action this Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash.
