The Eighth Annual Wheatshocker Nationals Championship night was a race to remember as the Rebels put on a show showcasing the best of young guns and cagey veterans. The thirty lap Feature had a little of everything in it for the fans of all ages. But when the checkered flag fell it was one of the original Rebels who would lay claim to the title, one that Brian Herbert wanted to win for a long time.

Koby Walters led the field to the green and jumped out to the early lead with Jed Werner, Keefe Hemel, Brian Herbert and outside pole sitter Lance Davis rounding out the top five after lap one.  Werner made quick work of Walters to take the point on lap two as the young guns were pacing the field. Lap three saw the red flag fly as Taylor Velasquez took a ride in turn four after contact with another car. Velasquez was done for the night but uninjured in the flip.

On the restart Werner once again jumped out to the lead with Walters in tow but behind them three of the URSS’s veterans were on a mission to run down the pair. Keefe Hemel held down the third spot with Herbert and Luke Cranston who had made his way up to the fifth slot from his eighth starting position by lap five. Herbert set his sights on Hemel as the duo would battle for several laps before Herbert took the spot on lap number eleven. Herbert started to reel in Walters gaining ground each lap finally taking the runner up spot away on lap nineteen.

Up front Werner still held the point with Herbert looking to cut into the leader’s advantage. Slowly but surely Herbert worked lapped traffic to position himself to make a run at Werner. Lap twenty-six saw the caution flag wave once again as John Carney’s mount came to a stop in turn two. This set up a four lap shootout for the crown.

On the restart Werner slid up the track just enough for Herbert to take the spot away relegating Werner to second with a hard charging Cranston, Darren Berry and Mike Peters comprising the top five. Herbert never looked back as he powered his way around the 3/8’s mile oval for the remaining laps to pick up the sweep of the weekends race.

Brian Herbert also picked up the special Customized Ozark Mountain Pellet Grill as the high point earner for the weekend. The unique winner’s trophy was provided by S&W Supply/Federated Auto Parts of Hays. The URSS would like to thank Lance Pittman and all of the crew down at S&W Supply for their support of the Wheatshocker Nationals and the entire series. Stop by the number 97 trailer at the next event, Brian and his crew will be putting that grill through its paces at all future URSS Events.

The Keizer Aluminum Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” was picked up by Jake Bubak who raced his way from his twelfth starting position to finish sixth. Heat Race winners were John Carney, Mike Peters and Kris Moore.
