After a successful showing with the USAC West Coast 360’s last weekend in Tulare, CA, Ryan Bernal carried that speed over to the Mike Phulps Motorsports winged car as he would pick up the win on Saturday night at the Petaluma Speedway just one night after finishing second at the Ocean Speedway.

“It was another really good weekend for our team,” Bernal said. “We continue to get the winged program better and to pick up a win and a second place finish is a huge confidence boost.”

Saturday night at the Petaluma Speedway, Bernal would kick things off by timing the Metal Works/Keizer Wheels/S&S Automotive No. 56 machine in fourth fastest during qualifications.

Running second to Andy Forbserg in his heat race, Bernal would move into the Top-Eight redraw where the eighth pill would place the Hollister, CA driver in the fourth row for the 25-lap feature event.

On a tricky Petaluma Speedway surface, Bernal would flex his muscle as he carefully worked his way through the field. Getting into the second spot, Bernal would set his sights on race leader Andy Forsberg as the leaders raced through heavy traffic.

With time running out, Bernal would make his move on the 23rd lap and take over command of the race lead. Keep Forsberg at bay, Bernal would race his way to his first winged win of the season, and lock into the Adobe Cup taking place at the Petaluma Speedway on October 8th.

Though lapped traffic worked to his advantage on Saturday, Friday night Bernal would be on the wrong end of it at the Ocean Speedway. Lining up on the front row of the 30-lap feature event on Friday night, Bernal would find himself in a dog fight with Justin Sanders late in the feature event.

In thick traffic, Bernal would be forced to check up late in the race and let Sanders by as he fell into the second spot.

The last few laps would see Bernal take a few shots at Sanders in hopes to reclaim the top spot, but he would come up short and finish in the second spot.

“It was a taste of both worlds,” Bernal added. “Friday night traffic kind of bit us, but on Saturday we were in the opposite position and took advantage of the traffic. I have to again thank my guys for their hard work, and it is good to get this team back into victory lane.”

Bernal and the Mike Phulps Motorsports team would like to thank Keizer Wheels, DMI, S&S Automotive, King Racing Products, Metal Works, Hoosier Racing Tires, Core Power, ART Chassis, Tri-L Mandarin Ranch, Tel-Tac, Willwood, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Permatex, Alan Kaiser Construction, Outlaw Graphics, BR Motorsports, FK Rod Ends, STIDA, Rockwell Security, ButlerBuilt, GoScope, 4 Alarm Promotions, and Dean Dealy Motorsports for their support during the 2016 season.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-10, Wins-2, Top 5’s-7, Top 10’s-8.

ON TAP: Bernal and his Mike Phulps Motorsports are still picking out where they will head next at time of press.
