From Oswego Speedway
OSWEGO, NY (August 31, 2016) – The Muldoon family has done plenty at Oswego Speedway through the years, but they had never sat on the pole of the International Classic until Friday night, when third generation shoe Mike Muldoon guided his Royal Purple No. 15 machine to a lap of 16.082 seconds to best a field of 37 Novelis Supermodifieds.
Muldoon’s father Mike qualified second for the Classic twice, in 1995 and 1997.
Muldoon topped fellow front row starter Pat Lavery in the Graham Racing No. 12, who cut a circuit of 16.189 seconds, to earn the right to be the first driver to see green in the Budweiser International Classic 200 on Sunday, worth $1,000 from CNY Chevy Dealers.
Lavery’s second quick lap scored the three-time feature winner $500.
Following Muldoon and Lavery on Sunday will be last year’s pole sitter Michael Barnes, defending ISMA Supermodified champion Dave Shullick Jr., and former Classic champion Davey Hamilton.
Keith Shampine, Tim Jedrzejek, Otto Sitterly, Jeff Abold, and Joe Gosek filled the top ten qualifying positions.
A total of 20 cars locked into the 200 on Friday as a part of CNY Chevy Dealers Qualifying Night including Dave Danzer, Aric Iosue, Brandon Bellinger, Davey Hamilton Jr., Ron Silk, Joey Moriarty, Bob Bond, Dave Gruel, and Kody Graham with Tim Devendorf hanging on to the 20th position with a lap of 16.573 seconds to earn $500 from Total Seal as the last qualifier.
On the outside looking in were stout pilots Dan Connors Jr., Bobby Santos, Chris Perley, and Dave McKnight who are currently set as provisional front row starters for Sunday’s Total Seal Semi Finals ahead of second round time trials early Sunday morning.
A total of 37 Supermodifieds were in the pit area with 34 taking time.
Both Brian Sobus and Mike Lichty were involved in separate incidents which
resulted in contact with the wall, while Ray Graham suffered mechanical woes on his No. 90.
When all was said and done 28 machines dipped into the 16-second bracket on Friday night.
The Novelis Supermodifieds will be back in action on Classic Sunday when they take to the ‘Steel Palace’ for hot laps at 9 a.m.
