Mitten Dominates Keystone 50 at Lincoln

ABBOTTSTOWN, Penn. (September 17, 2016) — Russ Mitten raced to his biggest payday of the year in Saturday night’s Lawrence Chevrolet Keystone 50 for super sportsman at Lincoln Speedway.

The Newville veteran started on the outside of the front row and led every lap of the extra-distance race, picking up all the lap money and $100 bonus for the leading the most laps for a total payday of $3,190 in scoring his fifth career win in the Pigeon Hills.

“I don’t know. I had a game plan when we went on the race track, and that was to run the cushion no matter what unless we got into lapped cars, which I did heavily,” said Mitten in victory lane, “I about crashed a couple of times behind them, but just trying to be as fast as you can and be cautious at the same time is tough to do.”

“I knew Frank was back there,” continued Mitten, “On the fuel stop, the guys asked if I wanted to make any changes. I said not to touch it…just put fuel in it. The car’s good, I could maneuver through traffic decent, and I didn’t want to mess it up. But when they put fuel in it, it really changed the car for about five or six laps. The car got tight on me, but as soon as the fuel burned off it came back around and got going good again. That last caution, I was sweating bullets because I knew Frank was back there. Anyone who follows sportman racing knows that Frank’s a killer and restarts, so I knew I had to hit my marks perfect on the restarts. I pretty much figured once I got through turns one and two and didn’t see anyone, I was going to be okay because three and four were my better turns.”

Mitten had nearly a two-second lead when heavy lapped traffic allowed all-time Lincoln super sportsman winner Frankie Herr to close in. But a caution with three laps to go gave Mitten a clear track, and he drove away to a 1.09 second win.

Herr settled for second, with fast time timer and fourth-starting Kenny Edkin third. Completing the top five were Doug Dodson and 11th-starting Rich Eichelberger. Rounding out the top ten were 15th-starting Mike Enders, 14th-starting Tony Jackson, Steve Fannasy, Timmie Barrick, and 18th-starting Devin Beidel.

Todd Leonard received the $100 hard charger bonus after starting 23rd and finishing 12th. Jay Fannasy received the hard luck award when he broke and dropped from the field while running fifth with three laps to go.

Fast time in time trials over the 28-car Super Sportsman field was set by Edkin with a 1-lap time of 15.314-seconds (88.155 MPH). Qualifying races were won by Scott Dellinger (who spun on the front stretch of lap five and dropped out) and Jackson.

Both support division features saw the winners lead only the final lap after racing-winning passes exiting turn four.

York’s Lucas Montgomery went from third to first when race leaders Harlon Leppo and Bob Stough got together in the final turns to the checkered. It was Montgomery’s fifth career Lincoln win. Leppo recovered to finish second, with Stough (who had started 11th) dropping to fifth. Crossing third and fourth were early race leader Jeff Herbst and Chad Earnst.

Heats for the 30 Central PA were won by Tony Mracovich, Stough, and Reed Saloney (who came from 10th starting spot and dropped from the field while leading on lap 13), with Greg Burd winning the consolation.

Jason Geeseman drove under Ryan Smith to win the 20-lap street stock feature by a half-carlength. Smith, who started fourth, took the lead from Sean Todd on lap five and led going into the final turns. He settled for second, with Jimmy Combs, Greg Diehl, and Todd completing the top five.

Heats for the 24 Street Stocks were won by Tyler Stump, Diehl, and Kyle Martin, who was involved in a three-car front stretch crash, ending his night, on lap five of the feature.

Next Saturday night, September 24th, at 7:30 PM, Lincoln Speedway will host the THIRD ANNUAL “DIRT CLASSIC” for 410 Sprints ($20,000 to win). Pit gates will open at 4 PM, admission for advance ticket holders 4:15 PM, and then regular admission at 4:30 PM. Time trials get underway at 7:30 PM.
