TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (October 14, 2016) — It has been nearly three months since the Terre Haute Action Track has come alive with the roar of engines. Race fans in the Midwest will get a chance to see the 1/2-mile back in action this Saturday night, October 15 for the “Hurtubise Classic” featuring the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship in its final Midwest race of the 2016 season.
The “Hurtubise Classic” was originally scheduled for September 16, but rainfall put a damper on the show, forcing the postponement to this upcoming weekend. Fortunately, Mother Nature has extended summer-like weather into the middle of October as weekend forecasts for Terre Haute show temperatures in the mid to upper 70s with partly sunny skies.
The “Hurtubise Classic” is run in the memory of Jim Hurtubise, a USAC star and Indy 500 competitor from the early days of the United States Auto Club. Hurtubise raced with the USAC Champ Car series from 1959-1974 and had 97 starts with 4 victories. The veteran driver also ran in ten Indianapolis 500-mile races between 1960-1974 and had a best finish of 13th in 1962. Hurtubise also made over 30 NASCAR starts, winning a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Brady Bacon leads the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship standings entering the event with Chase Stockon 245 points behind. Dave Darland, Robert Ballou, and Thomas Meseraull complete the top five. In the two most recent stops for the series at the Action Track, Ballou won the “Tony Hulman Classic” in May while Chase Stockon raced to victory in the “Don Smith Classic” during Indiana Sprint Week in July.
Pit gates Saturday will open at 3:00pm, grandstands at 4:00 with hot laps on track at 6:00, qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:00.
