CALISTOGA, Calif. (June 28, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi captured the biggest win of his career last Saturday when he claimed the Sprint Car Challenge Tour portion of the California Dirt Classic at Calistoga Speedway.
The win netted Scelzi a career-best payday of $10,500 plus a $500 bonus from Kyle Larson Racing thanks to his car owner, Nick McColloch, supporting the series.
“It was a rock solid night,” Scelzi said. “We were able to qualify well. We had a lot of speed.”
Scelzi timed in fourth quickest, which lined him up on the pole of a heat race. However, a steering problem relegated Scelzi to a third-place result. That was good enough to advance him into the dash, which he won to garner the pole position for the main event.
“We won the dash walking away,” he said. “We got the jump. Willie (Croft) tried to slide me on the entry to turn one and I drove around him. That was the last we saw of anyone.”
Scelzi did the same in the main event as he led from start to finish to earn his first triumph of the season.
“In turns three and four the track was getting pretty wide,” he said. “Turn one was a bit narrow, but had built a cushion up. The track was widening out, but was building a pretty big curb. I had confidence with that and we’d run half miles at Knoxville Raceway (in Knoxville, Iowa) the last couple of weeks so I felt really comfortable. I think that was a huge factor in us being as fast as we were.
“There was a little moisture off the bottom of turn four. I could hit it every restart and get just enough of a lead where the guys couldn’t slide me getting into turn one. We diced through traffic very well. The yellows came at good times for us when we were in heavy traffic. It was a good breakup of the race. The momentum of the race was really good. I set a good pace and was able to keep the pace from Lap 1 to Lap 30.”

“A big thanks to the McColloch Family, Scotty Martin and Mike Patterson,” he said. “It feels great to get our first win in the books.”
Scelzi will return to action with McColloch this Sunday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.
