KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 10, 2023) – In June at Knoxville Raceway Carson Macedo left in the back of an ambulance after a terrible crash and fire. Macedo triumphantly returned to Knoxville Thursday to win the preliminary feature during Iowa Lottery Qualifying Night during the 62nd NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s.
“It was a tough road back. You just take for granted or youth I think. I had not had a wreck that bad before, but the recovery process was tough. Beaver Dam that next weekend was hell on earth with my ribs being broke and still trying to race. To come back here and win is pretty incredible. The flame paint scheme on the car is a little bit of a joke for what happened last time to kind of make light of a bad situation, but thankful for my team. JJR is amazing and I think Jason maybe was riding with me tonight there after having a bad one he was he loved Knoxville Raceway and I love it to”
Macedo, from Lemoore, California, took the lead on lap 16 from Anthony Macri and held on through multiple late race cautions including a green/white checkered finish for his 10th feature victory of the 2023 season.
Macri and Garet Williamson started on the front row of the 25-lap feature. Macri took the lead on the opening lap, but was immediately under pressure from Dusty Zomer. Zomer was able to slide by Macri for the lead, only to have Macri take the lead back on the other end of the racetrack before they crossed the start finish line.
Williamson dropped Zomer to second on lap three while Macedo did the same to take third one lap later.
On lap eight Macri slipped off turn two and allowed Williamson and Macedo to close. Further back in the field Kyle Larson and Spencer Bayston traded fifth position with multiple slide jobs.
Up front Macedo pulled a slide job on lap 12 to pass Williamson, forcing Williamson high and bounced off the fence, losing several positions.
On lap 15 the first red flag of the feature appeared when Daryn Pittman lost a wheel in turn three and turned over. Pittman exited the car under his own power.
During the restart Macedo was able to slide by Macri for the lead in turns one and two. Macri was able to counter to pull alongside but could not get back in front of Macedo. One lap later the first of multiple cautions and red flags at the close of the race appeared when Ian Madsen slowed in turn four.
Bayston, who was in third, was able to blast around the top of the racetrack to pass Macri off turn two before the caution appeared for a cone that was knocked onto the racing surface.
Macedo pulled away again during the restart, but the racing was short lived when the red flag appeared again with three laps to go when Brad Sweet blew a right rear tire and flipped between turns one and two. Sweet exited the car under his own power.
Larson, who had driven up to fourth at that point, was able to get by Macri during the restart and set out after Bayston.
As Macedo had the checkered flag in sight the final red flag appeared when Jamie Veal flipped in turn two. This setup a green/white/checkered finish.
Macedo’s car was once again strong on the restart as he motored away from the field. Larson was able to slide by Bayston for second while Bayston held on for the final podium position.
Afterwards Macedo expressed what it was like seeing the race nearly end, only to have to hold off the field for one more restart.
:I knew Spencer (Bayston) was gonna be good. I knew that obviously Kyle and Abreu were fast. Rico’s doing a good job lately and I knew that if I just fire it off nice on the bottom there off a turn four and got to turn one it’d be tough to beat me,” said Macedo. “I was coming at the checker he was waving and then heard ‘red red red’ and I just thought ‘man if I were to blow a tire or something crazy would have happened it’d be pretty unfortunate’ but super thankful for this team. JJR is amazing. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
After battling with all of the front runners Macri held on for fourth spot while Abreu charged from 21st starting position to fifth.
Larson’s second place finish secured the pole position while Abreu earned the outside front row position.
Abreu was the fastest qualifier over the 54-car field with a lap of 15.703 seconds. Abreu was unable to transfer through his heat race but won the B-Main event.
Heat races were won by Zach Hampton, Kevin Thomas Jr, Kalib Henry, Kyle Larson, and Ayrton Gennetten. Shane Golobic won the C-Main following an engine change that forced him to miss his heat race event.
