Bergman holds on to win wild Willamette Speedweek feature

After taking Wednesday July 1st off for traveling drivers and teams were pumped to get back to racing on Thursday the 2nd. The venue would be Willamette Speedway for the four fourth round of Speedweek Northwest. Thirty cars were in the pits representing Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, and Montana as well as the nations of Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

Cockrum wins at the Sumar Classic

Shane Cockrum survived a late-race challenge and used a little luck to hold on for Thursday night’s “Sumar Classic” win at the Terre Haute Action Track. After capturing his first Silver Crown Series win last fall at Du Quoin, Illinois, Cockrum led most of the night’s 100-lap feature only to see his lead taken away in the late stages by C.J. Leary, but a timely caution and strong finish propelled the Benton, Illinois driver to a .424-second victory in the Hardy Boys Motorsports – Financial Transportation Services #71 Maxim/Chevy.

Gaunt to retire Saturday at Perris

Officials, fans, drivers and crews are anxiously looking forward to the big July 4th race at Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday. After all, it is an annual affair that is one of the famous Riverside County clay oval’s signature events. However, in another way, it is a night they wish would never come. Yes, it will be filled with great racing in the “Budweiser Firecracker 40” and the beautiful “We the People” fireworks sky concert presented by The City of Perris will light up the summer sky, but it will end with a sad twinge that is going to bring a tear or more from many in the crowd and in the pits. When the checkered flag ends the 40-lap main event, it will also signal the end of Rickie Gaunt’s sprint car racing career.
