“DIRT CLASSIC PRESENTED BY KASEY KAHNE” GOES TO STEVIE SMITH

Lincoln Speedway Tease 2014

From Bill Meyer

Abbottstown, PA — (September 27, 2014) — Stevie Smith has had a number of memorable wins at Lincoln Speedway. His first career World of Outlaws win was in the Pigeon Hills. His first track title was in the Pigeon Hills. His most recent World of Outlaws win was in the Pigeon Hills. And now his name will stand for all-time as the first winner of the “Dirt Classic Presented by Kasey Kahne.

A unique qualifying format which required the drivers to gather points for time trials and a pair of heat races put Smith on the pole for the 40-lap, $20,000-to-win Classic. He followed outside front row starter Lance Dewease for one lap before making the race-winning pass in the first two turns of lap two. From there, he held off Dewease and the rest of the field through heavy lapped traffic over the second half of the race to score his second win of the year and 26th career win the Pigeon Hills.

“It’s the position they put me in,” said Smith upon exiting his Fred Rahmer and David Pritchard-owned, Miller Brothers Chevrolet/A.R.A.N. Limited #51s in victory lane, “Fred, Moon (Byers), Freddie, and Dave…all the sponsors…they put me here. I’m having a hell-of-a-time doing it. It’s been fun.”

In addition to the all-time Lincoln record $20,000 top prize, the driver and owner each received specially designed giant plates produced by Moose Blocks.

“I want to see if Fred wants to trade me $20,000 for this plaque,” quipped Smith, “But he had three cars out here tonight, and he needs about $40,000!”

Smith had a comfortable 1.85-second lead with ten laps to go, but it quickly evaporated as Dewease closed onto his back bumper when the two heavy lapped traffic with eight to go. Third-place Shane Stewart (driving the Kyle Larson/Justin Marks #2) and fourth-place Alan Krimes were the others to close on the battle for the lead, as Smith tried to safely navigate the lapped traffic in the waning laps.

Those four crossed nearly nose-to-tail at the finish, with Smith’s margin of victory a scant quarter of-a-second. Central PA Point Series champ Greg Hodnett finished fifth, with All-Star points champion Dale Blaney, Danny Dietrich, NASCAR star Dave Blaney, and rookies Austin Hogue and Tim Wagaman (who started 17th) completing the top ten.

Brent Marks came from 21st after an engine fire in his first heat to win his second heat and finish 11th in the feature.

“I’m really happy to be a part of this deal, and we’re going to focus now on Williams Grove (next week’s National Open),” said Smith, “This win means a lot. Of course, Fred’s the all-time winner here, and my dad’s right there, and I’m a lot of wins behind them. They’re the best drivers ever to come to this track. But we took $20,000 out of here. I want to thank Kasey Kahne and Jarrod and Shannon Adams (Kasey’s sister and brother-in-law) for all their work on putting this together. And I want to thank Lincoln Speedway, Alan Kreitzer and the Leibys. The Leibys have done a lot for me and my racing career, and they helped me get here, too.

Coming from NASCAR competition to Lincoln with Kahne was Kyle Larson, both of which addressed the record-setting crowd during course of the evening. 1st Round Heats were won by Dewease, Stevie Smith, Dave Blaney, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., and Danny Dietrich. 2nd Round Heats were won by Adam Wilt, Hodnett, Steve Owings, Marks, and Stewart. C-Main was won by Brian Carber and the B-Main was won by Marks. Fast time in time trials over the 52-car field was set by Dewease with one-lap time of 13.329-seconds (101.283 mph).

Lincoln will remain dark next Saturday (10/4), as Williams Grove runs its annual National Open, and then return to action for its final show of the season on Saturday, October 11th. The event will include the 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints & Central PA Legends, with the All-American Outlaws added as a fourth division in a feature-only program for them. Gates open at 4:00 PM, with the first green flag waving at 6:00 PM.
