James McFadden showed why he is truly one of the young stars of Australian Speedway with an emphatic victory in the second night of the Qld Sprintcar Tri-City Shootout at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway (BIS) on Saturday night April 3, the win securing his position at the top of the points ladder ahead of the third and final leg of the Shootout in Toowoomba tonight (Sunday).
For the second night in a row, Todd Wanless won the R&R Racewear Dash and led the Feature through the opening laps and it took a daring yet calculated move by McFadden in turn three to wrestle the lead away from him on lap four of the Feature. Once in front, McFadden quickly established a sizeable lead and sliced his way through the back half of the field to put them a lap down as he raced to victory in the thirty lap Feature event.
It was McFadden’s second victory at BIS this season, his winning move on Wanless reminiscent of the one he put on Andrew Scheuerle to steal the opening Round of the Qld Speedway Spares Series from him back in September.
Cameron Gessner was the best of the rest, finishing second ahead of NSW racer Adrian Maher who edged out Wanless by a mere 0.118 of a second on the line after an epic battle between the two throughout the race. Darrell Hodges claimed fifth ahead of Richard Morgan, Ian Loudon, Kevin Titman, Peter Lack and David Muir completing the top ten.
The night’s racing was marred by two major accidents, the first of which ended Allan Woods’ night when he flipped hard into the turn one catch fence at the start of his first Heat race. Woods’ emerged uninjured but it was his second hard flip of the weekend after also flipping the night before in Maryborough and that will take a toll on the team’s racing inventory.
Bryan Mann rode out a frightening crash during the Feature, slamming the turn three wall hard and flipping the #16 Capalaba Wreckers/Qld Speedway Spares J&J. Mann was literally a helpless passenger in the crash after a large chunk of clay from the track bent the side panel in on the throttle pedal and he went into the wall wide open. Mann was also uninjured in the accident but like Woods, it was his second of the weekend.
David Muir opened the night by setting the quickest time of the hot lap sessions with a fast 11.525s lap ahead of McFadden (11.638) and Adrian Maher (11.739). Heat race wins went to Ian Loudon (2), McFadden, Melissa Boyes, Luke Rowell, Jason McDonald, Brock Dean and Richard Morgan. Troy Coomber won the C-Main and then raced his way to fourth in the B behind Darrell Hodges, Dan Murray and Tim Garrett to earn himself a start in the Feature along with Brett Thomas and Brodie Tulloch.
The third and final night of the Qld Sprintcar Tri-City Shootout will be held at Charlton Raceway in Toowoomba tonight (Easter Sunday), with McFadden in the box seat to pick up the lion’s share of the $70,000 in prize money, pool money and contingency awards on offer across the three nights of the Shootout this weekend.
