– HIGHLANDS, Texas (July 10) – The numbers are astounding.
Channin Tankersley has four heat race victories and two feature wins in five races at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, this season.
Lucky for the 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, the ASCS Gulf South Region kicks off a two-race weekend on Friday at the ¼-mile dirt oval.
“I seem to be able to get around that track well,” he said. “You’ve got to be on the gas and aggressive. It’s a tight track, so that can also bite you.”
It did bite him – hard – in the only heat race he didn’t win this season. Tankersley was involved in a nasty crash that destroyed his race car. He was able to piece it together and he started the feature, only to have to pull off in 20th after a lap.
He also sustained a 20th-place finish in the season opener when a top five went awry because of mechanical issues early in the main event.
“We’ve done really well there, but also had a couple of tough breaks,” Tankersley said. “We’ve won four heat races and had three top threes in the features, but those two 20th-place finishes hurt.”
Tankersley will race on Saturday at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, where he also claimed his heat race and finished fifth in the feature during his only race at the ¼-mile track this season.
“We have built some good momentum in the last few races and I’m excited to get back to a couple of tracks I’ve been successful at this season,” Tankersley said. “Hopefully we can keep up the trend of top fives and top 10s.”
Tankersley has recorded a top 10 in four of his last five races, which has moved him to fifth in the ASCS Gulf South standings. He is currently only 24 points out of fourth place.
