BRUCE JR. CRASHES LATE AT I-30 SPEEDWAY

Inside Line Promotions

– LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Aug. 30) – It definitely wasn’t the way Tony Bruce Jr. wanted to exit the track.

The Liberal, Kan., native was on a hook after nearly flipping with four laps remaining last Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.

“I slid up out of turn four and basically tried to knock down the fence,” he said.

It ended a top-10 run for Bruce Jr., who was piloting Clifford and Don Young’s sprint car in the ASCS Sooner Region event. Bruce Jr. finished 20th – his 31st top 20 in 33 features this season.

The night started for him on the outside of the front row in the heat race.

“On the start, Gary Taylor got the jump on us,” Bruce Jr. said. “The track was kinda right around the bottom. I pressured him pretty much every lap, but I was unable to make a move and get around him.”

He finished second, which put him 10th in points heading into the feature. Since it was lined up off points, Bruce Jr. started on the outside of the fifth row.

“We were just kinda hovering around 10th the entire race,” he said. “We were pretty good. The car was working pretty well. But we really couldn’t advance. It seemed like every time I tried to make a move I’d spin the tires.”

With four laps remaining, Bruce Jr.’s aggressiveness bit him.

“I was really getting frustrated riding in the same spot all race,” he said. “I went in a little bit harder in turns three and four than I did the previous lap.

“I don’t know how I didn’t get upside down. I caught the right rear tire and it spun around and almost tipped over. It wasn’t a light hit.”

It was a frustrating finish to an otherwise solid night with the Young’s, whom Bruce Jr. will drive for this Saturday and Sunday at the 9th annual LOS 360 Nationals at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with them a few times this year and we seem to get better every time we pair up,” he said. “I hope this weekend we can continue that momentum. Only this time, hopefully we can finish the race.”

He recorded two top 20s at the ASCS Warrior Region races last year and hasn’t competed at the 1/3-mile track this season.
