California, MO — (June 9, 2012) — Having spent the majority of his racing career in a winged sprint, Austin Alumbaugh scored a special win on Saturday night at Double X Speedway in Wingless Auto Racing action as he scored his first career non-winged win.
On the initial start, Mitchell Moore shot into the lead followed by Alumbaugh and Jeff Wingate. Alumbaugh and Wingate got together going into turn three with Wingate spinning to a stop. With a full field of sprinters also coming for the same real estate, things went south in a hurry. Frank Brown went over the top of Wingate’s stalled machine and then landed hard without turning over. Brown would suffer too much damage to continue. Zach Clark also suffered too much damage in the incident ending his evening. Also involved were John Helm, Steve Stroud, and Michael Ell. All three would be able to continue.
On the next try at green, Alumbaugh got the lead from his pole position. He rode to the bottom of the raceway as Moore and Brad Ryun gave chase.
Alumbaugh continued to extend his lead lap after lap as Josh Stephens entered the top three after getting by Ryun on lap ten.
As the laps continued to wind down, Alumbaugh continued to run the bottom to perfection as Moore gave chase. Behind the lead duo, the action was hot and heavy as Chris Parkinson and Helm moved their way up in the pack. Nobody would be a match for Alumbaugh who went on to his first career non-winged win in Rick Smith’s potent Engine Connection-powered MRP. Moore ran a strong second in his Kelly Potter-owned Gambler powered by a Denny Moore engine. Parkinson won a heated battle with Helm for third on the final lap with Stephens rounding out the top five. Ryun finished sixth as he was followed by Taylor Walton. Steven Cross, Lane Stone, and Stroud would round out the top ten.
WAR will be back in action on Saturday June 23rd as they make their first ever appearance at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. They will then make another appearance at Double X the following night Sunday June 24th.
Heat races for the sixteen car field were won by Walton and Moore. The winner of the toolbox courtesy of Waterloo Industries was Steven Cross.
