Rough Weekend for Abreu

From Peterson Media

In a pair of events over the weekend, Rico Abreu ended with two DNF’s, a weekend he would surely like to forget.

Friday night the 20-year-old pilot was in action at the season finale at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA. Abreu’s night got off to a very strong start as he timed in second fastest during qualifications.

Starting fifth in the 30-lap feature event, Abreu’s night ended on lap one, as he got into a pair of cars that were flipping, causing damage to his Abreu Vineyards/Outlaw Wings/ButlerBuilt entry that put him in the pits.

Saturday night he was back in action at the Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA to take part in the King of the West season finale event, the Cotton Classic, also marking his first series start since May.

Abreu again flexed his muscle during qualifications, as he bested the star studded field, and timed in on top of the speed chart.

Lining up in the second row of his heat, the St. Helena, CA driver powered his way to the lead, picking up the heat win, transferring to the feature, and also earning a spot in the nights dash.

Starting in the seventh spot of the dash, Abreu was able to score a sixth place finish, putting him in the third row for the 30-lap feature event.

A series of cautions and stoppages slowed the race during the early going, as Abreu ran in the sixth spot.

When the race finally got a long green flag run, Abreu was able to get up to the fourth spot as he battled with Jason Meyers, as he also had his hands full with a pesky Kyle Hirst.

A lap 10 restart saw the youngster drop back to fifth as he chased down Hirst, as the race went green for nine laps, until another caution flew on the nineteenth circuit. Abreu’s night would come to an end six laps later as fuel issues forced him into the pits.

“It was a frustrating weekend for sure,” Abreu said. “We had a great car both nights, but unfortunately we don’t have anything to show for it. Hopefully we can have some better luck this weekend at the Trophy Cup.”

Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt,, Outlaw Wings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.

ON TAP: Abreu is scheduled to compete in the Trophy Cup this Friday and Saturday in Tulare, CA.
