The schedule for the eighteenth season of competition is now set for the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS). This year will see the SOS visit 5 different tracks in 2013, returning to one for the first time in a while and competing at one for the first time ever. As well, the SOS continues the tradition as an affiliate sanctioning body for the 9th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
It all gets underway on the first long weekend of the summer, Saturday, May 18th as Brighton Speedway hosts the season opener for the travelling stars of the Southern Ontario Sprints.
Brighton Speedway, the long standing unofficial home of the Southern Ontario Sprints, will host races each month with the SOS returning in June on Saturday, June 8th and in July on Saturday, July 13th to the speedway by the lake.
August will really heat things up for the SOS with events occurring every weekend of the month leading up to the Championship finale on Labour Day weekend at Brighton Speedway.
Saturday, August 3rd will see the Southern Ontario Sprints return to South Buxton Raceway to headline the evening’s events. The SOS’s first race was Saturday, May 18th, 1996 at South Buxton Raceway and 2013 will see the Southern Ontario Sprints return for the 32nd time to the premiere dirt track of Western Ontario.
The SOS is Ontario’s travelling sprint car series and teams will next head back down the 401 to the eastern end of the province to visit Brighton Speedway once again on Saturday August 10th.
The next three races will see the Southern Ontario Sprints racing in competition on three different tracks. First up the Southern Ontario Sprints will face off against the weekly racers of Ohsweken Speedway on their ultra fast 3/8mile home turf Friday, August 16th.
The following weekend will see the Southern Ontario Sprints in double header action against the American invader Patriot Sprint Tour group. The first night will be Saturday, August 24th at Brockville Speedway. The SOS visited Brockville Speedway for the first time in 2008 when Steve Poirier won on a rainy Saturday in the 28fm. The excitement will really pick up on Sunday, August 25th when the Southern Ontario Sprints will roll into Cornwall Motor Speedway to hold a race for the first time. Cornwall Motor Speedway is a tight ¼ mile track filled with passionate fans that backs onto the 401. The SOS and PST will jam the pits Sunday night for this action packed event!
Once again, the Southern Ontario Sprints points championship will be decided at Brighton Speedway as part of the Labour Day Classic weekend of events. A full night of racing will be run on Saturday, August 31st including the “Dream Come True” Dash where one driver will get their first ever win in a Sprint Car. Sunday with be a full day of fun including a tailgate party, race car show and autograph session before the Championship is settled Sunday night, September 1st.
The SOS was one of the original affiliate sanctioning bodies for the Canadian Sprint Car nationals and will continue that tradition for the ninth annual race at Ohsweken Speedway. The CSCN is the largest Sprint Car event in Canada. The Nationals attract some of the biggest names in 360 sprint car racing from across Canada and the United States. This year’s CSCN will be held Friday, September 13th & Saturday, September 14th and will pay $13,000 to the winner.
