Benson takes home Sweet Dirt Dash win at Eagle

From Greg Soukup

Eagle, NE — (May 3, 2014) — Sweet Dirt Dash at Eagle Raceway, presented by Sam’s Club, was held Saturday evening with great weather and a very good crowd in attendance. Three and even four wide racing in the heats promised even better racing in the features.

There were no major incidents in the preliminary contests. During intermission the youngsters in the crowd were invited onto the front stretch to participate in a Candy Dash that was sure to provide sugar highs galore.

Gunner Pike led the first lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A main in the G25 with the 09RX of Randy Fox, Mike Morton Jr.’s 71 and the 71K of Josh Kennell close behind. Morton took second place and Gary Saathoff moved the 96 into fourth the second time around. Fox got back past Morton Jr. the next lap before taking the lead on lap 5 as Saathoff snagged third. Saathoff stayed on the move as he took second the next time around and then the lead after 1 more lap. Shawn Harker cracked the top 4 the same circuit. On lap 12 Harker used the low line to move up to third. Pike and the 7V of Adam Vrbka both stopped at the bottom of turn 4 shortly after that for the first caution of the race. The top 4 at that point were Saathoff, Fox, Morton Jr. and Harker. With 6 laps remaining Benji Legg moved into fourth in his #25B. 2 laps later Kevin Anderson’s 22K and the K00 of Joe Schidler got together and stopped at the bottom of turn 2. When the green flag flew to restart the race there was a big pile-up just past the flag stand involving numerous cars and bringing out the red flag to allow the safety crew to clear the mess. The restart again was halted when Dion Kovar’s 18, the 7 of Bob Ruisinger and the 3T of Nate Thompson came to a halt in turns 1 & 2. Legg moved up 2 positions to second on the restart and Harker again took fourth the next lap. Legg then snared the lead with just 2 to go as Morton Jr. again moved to 4th when Fox stopped for a moment in turns 3 & 4 before taking off again. At the checkers it was Legg, Saathoff, Harker and Morton Jr.

“I didn’t think I’d win tonight. I knew I had to be patient and work my way up. When you start that far back there are so many cars and so many wrecks you have to get past. Then when I got close to the lead I told myself ‘Just be patient and pick your line’. I got out front and just stayed smooth” Legg said. Benji’s sponsors include Jet Racing and Toobey’s Lumber.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next and Tim LaPointe put the 18 out front at the end of lap 1 with Mike Hansen’s 94, the 23 of Mark McKinney and Troy Dowty’s 17T chasing him. Hansen moved past LaPointe the second lap. John Cain cracked the top 4 the next lap in the 44. McKinney also passed LaPointe the next time around and Cain moved to third on lap 6. Chad Fegley moved into fourth on lap 7 but slowed dramatically the next circuit, putting the 6A of Adam Armstrong in fourth and Cain moved to second. Armstrong advanced to third with 6 laps remaining and vaulted up to the lead with 4 to go, but Hansen put him back into second before the lap was completed. Armstrong again passed Hansen the next lap and held him off for the victory. The first four were Armstrong, Hansen, McKinney and Cain.

This was Armstrong’s first win at Eagle this year and his 4th overall. He related “I’m not going to be able to race here weekly, but I will be here whenever my other track isn’t running because this is a fun track; challenging, but fun. Plus, it’s always great to race at a track with such good crowds, and Eagle has the best fans. I want to thank my aunt Bonnie, my dad Roy Armstrong, my mother and step-father and my whole family for all that they do for me”. Armstrong’s sponsors include Scat Crankshafts, Icon Pistons, Ron Fox & Sons Motorsports, Slezak Racing, Schmidt Machine, A 1st Rate Pumping Services and Jet Racing.

Then the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds moved onto the track. Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 5S of Bob Zoubek and the 2T of Josh True tangled and stopped in turns 1 & 2 to negate the start of the race. Clint Homan put the 27 out front of lap 1 followed by Jeff Joldersma’s 66, the 11N of Nathan Landauer and Justin Wulf’s 86 rounding out the top 4. Shane Hiatt’s 21H passed Wulf for fourth on lap 5. Dylan Smith vaulted the 95 into third on lap 10 and then passed Joldersma for second the next lap. Hiatt moved up to third on lap 14. Smith passed Homan for the lead with 3 to go and won pulling away. Smith, Homan, Hiatt and Joldersma were the top 4.

“I started 12th, and to be honest the bottom line looked ominous in the beginning, but I tried it. When I got up to 7th or 8th, everyone else was running the bottom so I moved up top. Heck, my right rear was bouncing off the wall in turn 2! Then towards the end we caught a lapped car and that’s what helped me pass for the win” Smith stated. Smith’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, Jet Racing, Woods Machine and Active Life Chiropractic.

Melissa Etherton led lap #1 of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact Feature. She was followed to the line by the 19X of Evan Hrabik, Ole Olsen’s 23 and Larry Cronin in the 5. Kevin Fearing passed Cronin the second circuit, putting the 28 into fourth. Cronin and the 3J of Jeremy Baker stopped at the top of turns 1 & 2 on lap 7 and the yellow flag flew. At that time the top 4 were Etherton, Hrabik, Fearing and the 14J of Justin Olsen. Hrabik went very high with 8 laps left and the caution lights were lit again as debris was found on the front stretch. Olsen passed Fearing for third on the restart and Matt Moyer also moved the 29 past Fearing to take over fourth. Justin Olsen and Moyer jumped up to first and second with 5 laps left, putting Ole Olsen into third and Fearing in fourth when Etherton stopped in turn 2 after contact with Olsen. Moyer took advantage of the restart to grab the lead and then held on to come home first. Justin Olsen, Ole Olsen and Fearing rounded out the top 4.

“It was a beautiful night for racing! Thanks to all of the fans for coming out and letting us put on a show for them. As always, thanks to Roger for giving us a place to play. But the biggest thanks tonight go to my tire specialist. He put on a set of tires that was ‘staggered special and matched perfect’. I want to send a shout out to Justin Olsen. He’s just 15 years old, but he gets it; he’s a heck of a wheel man” Moyer stated. Moyer’s sponsors include General Siding, Luddeman Construction, Kinnersley Grading and Scott Angel and the Design Shop.

The Mud in America IMCA Racesaver Sprints rolled out next for their finale. Shayle Bade’s 03, the 91 of Adam Gullion, Brandon Horton’s 1B and the 18 of Terry Richards led the pack at the finish of lap #1. Phillips moved up to third on lap 3. Nick Bryan’s 52 appeared to run over the wheel of Gene Ackland’s 14G on lap 4 and did a slow roll-over in turn’s 3 & 4. Bryan was unhurt. 1 lap after the restart Shon Pointer put the 20P into fourth but Horton did a 360 degree spin and kept going. The yellow flag had been brought out however, and the field was bunched again. At that time the top 4 were Bade, Gullion, Richards and the 100 of Clint Benson. Benson passed Richards on lap 6 for third and Jason Martin also got past Richards 2 laps later. Richards regained the position on lap 10 when Martin went high. Benson moved up to second on lap 13 and then passed Bade using the high line the next time around as Mike Boston put the 51 in fourth. Richards got back by Boston with 5 to go making the top 4 Benson, Bade, Gullion and Richards.

Benson related “This was a different track tonight, but I was confident. We’re really starting the year off good. I could run where I wanted, but I decided to run high in 3 & 4 because nobody else was going there. I want to send out a special thank you to Doug Wolfgang at Wolfweld Chassis and Mark Burch Motorsports”. Benson’s sponsors include J & T Auto, Trail Performance Coatings and Liberty Tax Service.

Next weekend is Eagle Raceway’s tribute to Mother’s Day as The Lincoln Saltdogs and Coors Light present Dirty Diva’s Night. Front gates swing open at 5:30 with hot laps beginning at the same time. Racing will start at 6:30 with the Mud In America IMCA Racesaver Sprints, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts battling on the high banks of America’s Home Track. The pit gates will open at 4 PM and pit passes are $25.
