After not winning at Knoxville Raceway all season Terry McCarl made up for lost time sweeping the 360 and 410 sprint car programs on Saturday. McCarl won the ASCS Lucas Oil National tour feature followed by catching Jamie Veal in lapped traffic in the waning moments of the 410 Sprint Car main to complete the sweep.

The wins were the 57th and 58th of McCarl’s career at Knoxville and the fourth time he has swept the 360 and 410 features in the same night.

“Unreal! I have to thank my guys. It’s hard running one car, let alone two. Doug Rankin led the way. He used to be in the stands here and now he’s winning races at Knoxville,” said McCarl.

410 Sprint Car Feature

Dustin Selvage led the field into turn one, but by turn three Terry McCarl and Jamie Veal made it three-wide for the lead with Veal leading the opening lap. Further back in the pack Brian Brown was making a move through the track when he hooked the cushion and nearly turned over. One lap later Rico Abreu hit the inside berm and slid across the race track to bring out the caution flag.

Veal pulled away from McCarl during the restart while Dakota Hendrickson and Matt Juhl were under pressure from Kerry Madsen. Madsen drove by the outside of Juhl to take the fourth spot. Several laps later Madsen slid by Hendrickson for third on lap eight. Just as Madsen got by Hendrickson hooked the inside berm and slid sideways in front of the entire field. Thankfully everyone avoided avoid Hendrickson’s stopped car.

The restart was unsuccessful in completing another lap due to Juhl spinning in turn two to bring out another caution flag.

Once the field remained under green flag conditions Veal pulled away as the Madsen’s raced for third with Ian passing Kerry for third with Brian Brown also applying pressure. Kerry and Ian traded third back and forth before Kerry Madsen took the spot back on lap 11.

Soon Veal was mired in slower traffic and McCarl managed to catch him for the lead. McCarl took over the top spot on lap 16. Veal continued to drop back as Kerry Madsen, Brooke Tatnell, and Ian Madsen also able to get by Veal in traffic.

Up front though it was all McCarl picking up the win over Kerry Madsen and Tatnell.

ASCS 360 Sprint Car Feature

The start of the 360 sprint car feature was short lived when Tyler Groendyke spun after racing three wide for the lead into turn three, nearly collecting Brian Brown and Terry McCarl in the process. Behind them Carson McCarl, Nate VanHaften, and Rager Phillips also were collected in the incident.

The victory McCarl’s seventh in 360 competition the Marion County Fairgrounds for the Altoona, Iowa native.

“Leading like that we had a great car. You put guys behind you like Brian Brown and Ian (Madsen) and behind you and it’s hard to not show them how you start a little bit,” said McCarl. “I was a little worried about that front wing, it got banged up again. The car was handling awesome.”

The second attempt to start the main saw Terry McCarl sweep to the inside of Sawyer Phillips for the lead. On lap two Hafertepe dropped Phillips back to second while Ian Madsen and Brian Brown swapped the fourth spot back and forth. Brown eventually pulled away from Madsen and disposed of Phillips on lap eight.

As McCarl continued to pull away Brown started to real in Hafertepe for the second position. Brown looked to the inside of Hafertepe in turn one on lap 11, but could not make the pass.

McCarl started to overtake slower cars on lap 12 as Brown and Hafertepe started to race for second. Brown used the top side of the track in three and four to take the position.

After taking the second spot Browns started to close in on McCarl, but was boxed in slower traffic just as Carson McCarl spun in turn four to bring out the caution flag.

Brown immediately challenged McCarl for the lead in turns one and two, but McCarl maintained the position. The caution appeared again after Sawyer Phillips had engine problems and coasted to a stop at the inside of turn three.

During the restart Brown followed McCarl through turns one and two and tried to challenge using the bottom of turns three and four. McCarl held the spot. One lap later Brown’s car slowed in turn two and brought out another caution.

During the restart Hafertepe got a run under McCarl, but could not make the pass for the lead. This opened the door for Haferetepe to be passed by Ian Madsen down the backstretch. Then going into turn thee Seth Bergman and Tim Kaeding through a hard slide job on Hafertepe nearly making contact to take over third and fourth positions on lap 20. Hafertepe challenged Kaeding two laps later, but was unable to work his way back into third.

The final caution flag appeared with three laps to go for debris on the race track.

During the final restart Ian Madsen realed in McCarl for the lead, but bobbled through turns three and four coming to the white flag nearly jumping the cushion in turn four. That gave McCarl the distance he needed to win the feature. Madsen, Bergman, Hafertepe, and Kaeding rounded out the top five.
