Gas City,Indiana (July 8th, 2016)-Tyler Courtney turned what could have been a disappointing night into one he’ll never forget by capturing his first USAC National Sprint Car feature, winning Night #1 of Gas City I-69 Speedway – “Indiana Sprint Week”.
Hunter Schuerenberg started on the pole with Max McGhee along side for the 30 lap affair. A first lap caution for a Courtney spin sent the #23 to the tail in 24th position for a complete restart. As the green flew once again, Schuerenberg jetted out to the lead with Chad Bosepflug, McGhee, Bryan Clauson and Brady Bacon all in hot pursuit.
A yellow on lap nine saw Boespflug go off the track and return to tag the tail of the field. On the restsart, Clauson went up top and drove around Schuerenberg with Brady Bacon making a charge and moving into 2nd.  Shortly, Bacon slid high off the track and dropped back to 5th. At the halfway mark Clauson looked to be gone with large advantage but, the #23 of Courtney was making remarkable progress passing cars on the low side.
It was soon evident Courtney was for real and was going to challenge for the lead. At lap 19 it was Clauson, Courtney, Windom, McGhee, Shane Cottle and Bacon. As Clauson continued to use the high side, Courtney drove under him in turn four of lap 23 and brought Windom and Cottle with him on the bottom and past Clauson.

With 7 to go, Courtney maintained 1st with Windom and Cottle close behind with Clauson giving it his all on the top. As the laps were winding down the top four cars held their own and when the white flag flew, Clauson was not ready to throw in the towel and made a valiant charge on the high side around Windom and Cottle and slid into 2nd at the checkers as Courtney took his first USAC win in front of a packed house after coming from a 24th spot after a restart.
